Help Me Find The Perfect Multitool

Recommended Posts

It seems like I saw a knife like this advertised somewhere recently, but I can't recall the maker. I'm looking for a multitool, but not the typical Leatherman style double folder over. I want something that is primarily a knife, and looks more like a conventional knife. I want to be able to carry it clipped into my pocket, with the blade tip up. The blade would need to have the thumb stud on it for one-handed opening, but there would be some basic tools that fold out, perhaps a screwdriver, bottle opener, etc.

Anybody know if something like this really exists?

I have one of these given to me as a present. I have never used it and never even opened the packaging. Carries tip down though and has a thumb hole instead of thumbstud.

You talking about the Kershaw Select Fire?

That claw area is not really touted as bottle opener but it might work ... I don't have one to try it on so can't say.

The Leatherman Skeletool CX will likley be my next one. I bought a few for graduation presents and really wished I had picked up one for myself. It is about the size of a pocket knife, has a pocket knife style clip on it or it can be carried by a built in carabiner style clip. It has more of a "knife" feel than any other multi tool I have owned.

+1 for sog! I have the eod multi tool and you can swap out the tools you want to configure it. I also saw a Swiss army knife that had a big blade and a few multi tool attachments .

Claws work as a bottle opener in a pinch. Not great but works. Could be much better if you were to shave about 1/16-1/8 off the little nibs.

Great knife, I've got two of them myself.

I reckon I must be the only one that carries around a SAK

Nope. I carried a SAK for a long time while in college and after (yes, I was a fan of the show 'MacGyver') but at some point switched to a multitool (my favorites are the Gerber styles where the pliers slide in and out - I like them for fishing and often use the pliers to get hooks out of fishes mouths and trying to open a flip-open style with one hand while holding a fish in the other is a PITA.

I liked carrying the Gerber but then I started carrying a handgun. When I carry in a belt holster, that is just too much crap hanging on my belt. I also haven't gotten to fish as much, lately, so I went back to carrying a SAK. I do sometimes miss the pliers, though.

Right now I just carry a basic Tinker model but wouldn't mind having one of the 'Forester One Hand' models eventually. In fact, I may have to make a little trip up to Smoky Mountain Knife Works soon to see if I can find one. That might fit the bill for what the OP is wanting, too, except it doesn't have a pocket clip from what I can tell:

You might be interested in a Wenger Ranger 61. Wengers are now made by Victorinox. This one already has the clip. It also comes with a 4" one hand opening main blade and other tools. It is tip down.

I carried a Wenger in Desert Storm (more traditional SAK witha button lock) and it was a damned fine knife. Sadly I lost mine.

I bought a Leatherman FreeStyle a few months back & it's easily my favorite multi-tool out of the 6 or 7 of them that I own, it doesn't have any gadgets other than a knife blade & pair of pliers but those are the two tools I use most day-to-day anyway so it's worked out really well for my EDC needs.

Granted I still keep other multitools in tool, glove & tackle boxes and in bug out bags and stuff like that, but I always carry the FreeStyle clipped inside my front pocket.
