I stand corrected. My apologies.

Methinks I have followed the Three S rule for far too long. Thanks for setting me straight, OS!

Go to North Carolina and trade with him. Neither one of you will have broken any laws (that I'm aware of) and, provided you're both agreeable to, and happy with the trade, everything'll be cool. B)

I'm afraid that's exactly the wrong answer, legally.

Any interstate personal transaction, even giveaway, must be transferred via FFL and 4473 to the recipient in his home state. That IS the law. The only exceptions are inheritance and loaning/renting.

You may buy a long gun from an FFL in another state (if he agrees to) but cannot buy a handgun except through a FFL in your own state.

Only purely legal way to do this for you in NC is to take your gun over there and transfer it to him via NC FFL. His gun would need to get over the line to a TN FFL for transfer to you. Or vice versa, he comes over here first with his gun.

So in other words, if I find a good deal on a handgun from a private party in Kansas when I go up in September to do Best Man duties for my best friend, I can't - because I'm a legal resident of Tennessee - legally make the purchase unless it goes through an FFL third party in Tennessee? Good to know in advance!

Correct. They'll have to ship it to an FFL in TN.

Needs to go through an FFL and you could still get ripped. Is it something that you can’t trade here in a face to face trade?
