Unions see a decline in Wisconsin due to voluntary status...

When Walker made it so the members of a union weren't forced to pay dues by

automatic deduction from their checks, the union membership dropped precipitously.

Masses chose to drop out, rather than pay them. They decided they had better uses

for their money than the union was providing whatever services claimed.

I didn't have a problem with my union, either, until they closed the shop. I'm captive,

now. That is wrong. Wisconsin and Walker did the right thing. Voluntary membership

in a union makes people and their union have a more honest relationship, if a union

is good for anything at all.

That is good news. I think one of the reasons the unions were so scared was giving the option of joining or not, most people won't. I think the huge drop in membership proves that. Good for them.

My shop closed with the last contract and merged with the Teamsters. I was against it. I have no choice

but to pay in. I'm glad someone is benefiting, though. Government unions are a scourge on this country

and have no place but to cause the taxpayer grief.

The argument I always hear about my union is that it would have been much worse without. I never hear

any evidence to back it up. And the mechanism used to increase wages is always tied to the minimum wage,

which turns me off every time I hear it.

There is a value to be placed on everyone's job, but a union uses extortion to create value. A lot of my

fellow employees don't understand, but gladly they are warming to the idea in some places.

I wouldn't be in a union if the place I worked at wasn't a closed shop. Hopefully we will get something like this in the works soon. I would love to not have to pay someone else to go to work.

Is it closed, even in a right-to-work state, because the railroad company somehow contractually agreed that it can be closed even in a right to work state? I don't understand the law, guess a company can do what it wants, but that doesn't seem right. Turn it around-- a company couldn't voluntarily decide to have an open shop against a union's wishes in a non-right-to-work state?

Just curious if you have more details about that situation and how it works in TN.

Lester, I think it has to do with the Railway Labor Act,

allowing it to close shop. Not sure, though. I can

move my membership to another union, but that's

about it. I've thought about starting a new union:

Amalgamated Bu@@ Fu@@ers Union and lower

the dues. I have a following, occasionally. ABFU

dues would be about ten bucks a month for the

Preparation H.
