I don't know much about handguns, this is my first one so. But when I chamber a round it kind of sticks before it goes in the chamber. I have an xd 40 subcompact. I just tried the 9 round mag and it chambered fine but the extended mag kind of catches.

Recheck the barrel and slide to ensure that it’s a .40 S&W, then break the pistol down and clean it, scrubbing out the chamber and barrel. Then try inserting a round into the chamber and see if it stick’s. Also, make certain that you are either using factory ammunition or properly sized hand loads that have been inspected and checked with a gauge. Problem's with magazine's sticking or causing feed problem's are not uncommon so clean and lubricate the magazine as well.

Are you riding the slide forward or are you pulling it all the way back and letting it go like a slingshot?

Riding the slide. i rode the slide with the 9 round mag and it was smooth it seems like with the extended mag it sticks the first few rounds or so. But if I let it sling shot it works fine, so I guess I shouldnt ride the slide then.

This. There is a lot of pressure pushing against the bottom of the slide from a fully loaded mag. Fairly common.

I know how to handle firearms safely, I have other firearms. I plan on going through the steps to get a carry permit though.
