Wrong Oil in Waver Runner

Our family has a 2004 Yamaha WaveRunner XLT 800, 2-stroke. Needed oil, 4 stroke oil was put in, ran fine for a day, today started quitting after about 30 feet or so. They got it back to the beach, put on trailer.

Is that small amount of time enough to blow it due to the heavy weight of the 4 stroke oil not being able to get down past the heads?

I don't understand. Why would it need to get down past the head? My limited understanding is the auto injection mixes it with the fuel. The fuel goes into the crankcase, then into the cylinder. The head is nothing more than a plate with a combustion chamber. There's nothing there to lubricate. I would say it's probably okay. My grandfart was too cheap to ever buy two stroke oil. He mixed used motor oil with gasoline and ran it in his weedeater with no issues. Smoked like tar kiln though. If you're worried, you can always buy an extra set of plugs, pre mix the gas, and after emptying the wrong oil, put the right oil in. Run it for a while, change the plugs, ride on. I had a scooter the auto injection messed up on. I just premixed the gas and forgot about the oil tank. It ran fine.

I misunderstood the information told to me. Maybe it is the cylinder. "Boat Mechanic" on side of highway in Lake County told my brother that, not enough oil got down there and ruined the motor. Need a new one. I'm going to go up and get it, take to to Jackson, TN were my step father bought it and get a 2nd opinion.

I don't see that it would blow the motor with the day and a half of use. But I could be wrong, very wrong.

What Caster said. I suppose it could've glazed up the cylinder walls if it over-heated. Wave runners typically get used pretty hard. I'd pull the plugs and have a look, before I got real excited.

If it were mine, I'd drain the fuel/oil, replace with new fuel/oil, replace the plugs, and see if that helps. 4-stoke oil will foul out the plugs in a 2-stroke, which could be why it will run for only a short time.

Even if that works, I'd have someone check the compression at some point.

Also, even if what I suggested works, you'll probably want to pull the new plugs and clean them after running it for a while. Even after draining the bad fuel/oil mixture, some will remain inside the engine until it's burned, possibly slightly fouling the new plugs.

It sucks being a 100 miles away! It's out of the water and on the trailer, I'll go up soon and pick it up.

It's hard for me to believe that the motor is toast. I can understand running it without oil and it blowing it, I can understand it smoking, running like crap, sputtering, etc with too light a weight of oil or too heavy oil, rich/lean etc. I would think some oil is better than no oil, but again, I might be wrong.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the worst case while you're not on the scene. Sounds like you fouled the plugs and you'll have to clean out the oil tank and put new plugs in. Hold that easy fix in your mind until you open it up and actually have the facts. IMO.

Not saying this your case but I had suzuki TM400 2cycle back in the seventies which I put the wrong oil in and it threw a skirt off the piston.

I also had a harley and the oil was for it was what I used probably a really heavy weight.

Don't mean to be a downer like I said this was in th 70's and Im sure technology has greatly improved

Best of luck and I hope its alright
