Decherd, TN is considering photo speed enforcement equipment. If this passes, I think Decherd will come more of a ghost town than it is now.A bad idea to generate revenue!

I don't really like them but don't speed and you won't have a problem.

I'll second that! At least with speed cameras you have a chance and a choice. Traffic light cameras where they deliberately shorten the time span of the yellow light are not only specifically aimed at creating revenue, but are also a genuine safety hazard. (Ask any truck driver who's been ticketed by one because he refused to do a panic stop to avoid taking a chance on his load shifting - I've gotten two and in both cases was traveling well below the posted speed limit but simply didn't have time to stop before the light changed. Thank you, Mr. Haslam for the moratorium on these things!)

I can see were this one is going .............. ahhhhh ahhhhh big brother ahhhhh!

Let me put it in more mainstream language and remove the politics for you guys. :)

I would rather have a uniformed officer do the job rather than the camera.

At least then, if there are no speeders he can also scan with his eyes for slow moving drunks, actual crime, etc.

I don't really see traffic cameras as making anything more safe than a cop can.

I respect law enforcement, not traffic cams.

Better? ;)

I hate them for many of the reason already stated, such as short yellow lights. I have actually told my city council after they put them in, I think their should be a civilian group allowed to audit them. I have seen the camera's flash when there was nothing in the intersection. I don't believe they are accurate and due to the number of times I have seen them go off with nothing around them I would like a report of how many false alerts they get. Those inductive loops in the road, I don't believe they are speed accurate, just on the way they work, a big truck verse a car it has to pick up different, however I don't have the resources to prove anything like that.

They said the same thing about Oak Ridge. And it hasn't made a difference. Everyone makes a big deal of these cameras and how it will ruin everything but when they're installed nothing changes. Don't speed and you won't have to worry.

More revenue generation for Government. Got to love these commies! <grr>

Actually, the majority of the revenue goes to the camera company, not the municipality. The cameras are leased, not purchased. The lease agreement typically requires a significant percentage of the revenue be paid to the leasing company.

All the more reason to do away with them.

Honestly, they are a good thing. The fines are cheaper($50) by law in TN and they don't go on a DMVR. The violator gets a ticket in the mail with several photos of there violation and a link they can go to so they can watch video of there offense. The video will show the speed the vehicle is traveling to a tenth of a mile per hour.

Progressives love folks like you.

First they get their foot in the door with giving cheaper tickets and not putting points on your record. But over time I will 100% bet you that law will change and it'll become the same as a cop writing the ticket. ;)

Anyone remember the movie DEMOLITION MAN? Remember those stupid things all over the place that when they even said a curse word and it would ticket them? Is that next?

They have those all over town here. I'm not sure how much of a deterrent they actually are, once you learn where they're located at people will slow down for the cameras and speed up again once past them. They can't afford to put one on every corner (yet).

I don't like the traffic light ones either for the same reasons mentioned above. When it's raining and the road is wet, I'm not slamming on my breaks and taking a chance that the idiot behind be is going to be able to stop in time, when they can hardly stop without hitting me on a clear day as it is.

So you'd prefer higher taxes to pay that extra cop?

I'd prefer they spend the money on burglaries and violent crimes, but that doesn't make any money for the departments. My hometown (900,000 people) has almost no police enforcement of traffic laws due to budget shortfalls. It's really not much worse to drive there than here...

This morning, I missed my light in Donelson because of a police escort. 2 Busloads of THP officers with 2 cars and 2 motorcycles leaving the Nashville Police Academy. They stopped traffic for my green light to allow the 2 busses to run the red. Really riles you up in the morning.

Judging by all the cities I've been in, we have plenty of cops at this time. If particular areas are a problem for speeders or redlight runners, they can move the traffic cops to those areas.

Cities should have a toll to enter their city limits. it would at least be the upfront way of jacking more money out of people

LOL

Speeding is a crime is it not? If so, how can you face your "accuser" if your accuser is a computer tied to a camera?

Law enforcemetn is something law enforcement officers (i.e. human beings) should do, not machines.

Maybe I'd feel diffenrently if I wasn't sure that these things have ZERO to do with "safety" or "law enforcement" and 100% to do with revenue generation (but I doubt it )!

I'd much rather law enforcement have that human element. this high tech crap is unconstitutional, like you said, Robert. There was a case

in the great state of California where the State Supreme Court agreed.

Speed cameras, drones, DUI sensors in cars(was just on TV). How much more of an Orwellian future do we put up with? It's all about money.

It leaves all those cops on the side of the Interstate freed up to generate cash.

I don't know. My son got one at an intersection in Knoxville for not completely stopping. I paid it and I think it was $60.00.

I'll never pay one again, though. I don't know if Clarksville has any of the speed cameras, but we have the intersection

ones, and I have been through one very close, but no ticket. I've seen them go off in front of me by a car going too close

to a red light. It looked like it was something a cop might not fool with.

All these devices are is an eventual creep into totalitarianism. They get their way with them at first by people not knowing

and just paying the fine, until they become mainstream. There will always be something more, next.

I wonder how much revenue Oak Ridge is generating with those cameras? I drove there, recently and was amazed by all

the cameras I saw.

In theory, all photos are reviewed by an officer before the ticket is issued.

While I agree philosophically that these things are far too "big brother" and why not employ an actual person and so on... but as others have said, if you don't break the law, you don't get a ticket.

The problem is easy to solve.... If no one speeds and no tickets are issued, there's no revenue stream to pay the lease on the cameras and the cameras will come down.

So in theory, If I'm not doing anything illegal, I guess I should be okay when a government entity listens to my phone conversations, searches my vehicle, searches my house, searches me, reads my mail, tracks my internet usage, and knows my whereabouts down to the millimeter all without any court ourder or oversight. ;)

Exactly! Strip our freedom some more, just don't

break any law and it's A OK! It's that kind of

complacency that's got us in the mess we are

already in. But no one ever thinks about that.
