What's are good .223 load for 62 and 69 grain bullets?

Recommended Posts

That is a fairly broad question, actually.

What rifle, which bullets ? In surplus 62 gr IMI FMJBT/WCs, I get decent results using N133 and Win748,

What powder do you have on hand ?

What is DLM?

Look at my signature, click the link, send that gentleman a private message and be patient, he's an extremely busy man.

Now, I'm not poking at you or anybody, it's a fact of life for any businessman, but if you'll actually spend some real money you will find him to be a very accommodating man. You don't have to spend thousands, but you'd poop a brick at what you can get from him for say.....$500. You will NOT get a better deal on stuff from anyone else, anywhere else.

He doesn't tell lies and he sells cheaper than anyone, so obviously he has a lot of enemies. :)

I use 3031 in my 7-30 Waters, but it meters badly. It is a long, extruded powder and works good for the limited number of rounds I do for the Waters. For the .223, I'd try 748 or 2520. They both meter very smoothly.

Is the 3031 longer than IMR 4895?

I understand that, but I don't want to buy 8lbs. of powder that i've never tried. How much is a pound? Is this a common powder that I could find anywhere that carries powder?

I did a quick look arround at various surplus dealers. Not exhaustive, but I did not see anyone selling 1 lb jugs (the military pulldowns seem to all be in 8lb), Maybe someone will loan you a bit to try.

I don't have any WC846. However, I will note, that it, WC844, and WC842 are well characterized for military calibers, and I personally would have no qualms about buying a jug for .223 or .308.

So Hodgdon BLC2 is the same?I may pick up a 1 lb. can of that and try it.I been buying some bullets and some powder at Outpost Armory. They are resonable on their reloading stuff I think ,but way too high on their guns and ammo. That's about the closest place to me that sales reloading supplys.I work down that way anyway so it's on the way. Thanks for everyone's input.

Thanks Jeff

I have had great luck with 24.5-24.7 grains of Varget with 69 SMK's. It seems to be one of those universal loads that works in a lot of platforms.

With that being said I chronographed a Standard Deviation of 2 (yes two) with the surplus powder that David sells. It meters very well and David is a great guy to deal with. He supports the shooting sports and has a welath of knowledge for anyone that asks. He is also a veteran.

Even though you say you don't want 8 pounds you are paying about the same for 8 pounds as you would for 3-4 pounds of most other powders.
