Legal?

I have a co-worker that has a 17 year old son. She is a single mom (and kinda hot). He is an avid outdoorsman that hunts, fishes and presents himself as responsible. She asked me if it is illegal for him to be in posession of a shotgun or rifle as he often has these in his vehicle. I told her that as I understand it he must have a valid hunting license, ensure that the firearm and ammo are properly stowed, and be in the company of legal guardian or gardian's rep. Please advise.

No need to be in the company of a legal guardian. At 17 he can drive himself to hunt, just needs to be sure guns are unloaded and guns and ammo are stored properly. Don't believe hunting license is even necessary as it is legal for minors to partake in recreational shooting as well.

10-Ring has it.

He doesn't need to have any supervision and indeed, doesn't even have to be going hunting to have the guns in his vehicle, as long as they are unloaded and ammo is well separated by vicinity.

Minors can own/possess both handguns and long guns as long as they were given or loaned to them "for the purposes of hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or any other lawful sporting activity".

I thought it was illegal for minors to be in the posession of a handgun. Good to know. Thanks for the info.

He has to be travelling to or from those activities with an unloaded gun. He can’t just keep an unloaded handgun in the car all the time.

39-17-1319 would suggest that is true as regards a minor with a handgun, but seems to me a long gun would seem to be simply covered with the same exceptions and defenses in 39-17-1307 and 39-17-1308 that would relate to an adult -- meaning simply having unloaded long guns in the car all the time would be fine.
