Serial # on barrels?

I just got a new barrel in for a pistol and it has the serial# very lightly stamped on the chamber portion. Am going to polish the barrel out, but am worried this could alter the edges of the numbers. As hard as the barrel is I do not foresee the # getting completely wiped but it will affect it a little.

Question is, are there any laws that may consider this as altering the serial #? And does the barrel require a serial# to even be on it if the # is still on the frame?

The only serial number you need to worry about is the one on the pistol (frame).

Well, many is the time that other fitted/critical parts are numbered as well so they don't get separated while being built.

XDs have matching serials on lower, barrel, and slide.

Only the lower (receiver) "counts" with BATF.

- OS

Same with the Walther (PPQ at least).
