Just got back from a range session and lunch with two female colleagues from the college. Both have been bugging me to take them shooting for a while and we finally found some mutually acceptable time. I loaded up everything from my Sig .22 to my new AR (the AR was for me, but they both wanted to try it as well.) One completely new shooter, literally had never even held a gun before, and one had some experience with her dad when she was a girl. Two very liberal college professors. (The best kind!!)

Anyway, I set up some basic handgun targets ranging from 9 ft to 25+ feet and gave a basic safety briefing and orientation to the pistol. The we let some lead fly. Beautiful day, outdoor range at Gallatin Gun Club. Had the place to ourselves, wild turkey up on the 200yd berm, sun shining, breeze. Very nice.

They both loved it. One was hitting dead center of mass from 25 ft with a gun she had never fired before starting with the first shot. She also got off a nice double tap from low ready in .92 seconds. Her hands were rock-steady. I was impressed. Both did great and shot my .22, my Glock 19, a Browning 9mm, and a J-frame in .38. Both had good range manners and were generally safe, except for some trigger finger discipline we dealt with early on.

Then I broke out my new AR and had some fun. Both wanted to try it, and both enjoyed it, although they felt it was very heavy. And, showing that they're are educated women, both preferred by Glock over anything else they shot that day.

Dunndw joined us halfway through and brought his new AR build. DPMS lower, very nice. He also had a nice EBR in .308 which packed a wallop.

A fun day and over lunch both women asked me when my next NRA Basic Pistol class is. And they want to bring the husbands.

A good day.

It was a good time. The ladies...one of them was...well..unimpresssed. the other one seemed to have a much better time. Now...if the BOTH show up to class...then you've done a FINE job.

Next time you head out let me know...I WANT THAT STEEL GONG TO RING dangit. I need to get the ACOG knockoff sighted in on the DPMS 308

The 5.56 AR was pretty good with the irons.

Len and I scared the steel plate to death. There was dirt flying all around it. I'm going to say we hit it..just the 223s weren't big enough to make it move :-)

seems most non gun people with an open mind will enjoy a day at the range once they stat shooting and realize that a gun is just a tool.

I thought you were going to tell us that you had been converted Len!

Her hands were rock-steady. I was impressed.

And do you care to elaborate on these rock-steady hands. What impressed you so much about them?

Agreed.

I've gotta say that the excitement level rose as we left the range and the fun began to sink in some more. Even the less-enthusiastic one of the two (the one dunndw said was "unimpressed") got more excited about it as we talked afterwards. I even spoke to her husband afterwards and he told me she called him gushing about how much fun she had.

Danny, I think those gongs were an optical illusion. I swear I shot right through them...
