Looking for someone to aid in restoration.....

I have an old pistol that I am looking to restore....

It is a revolver...i was able to get some of the surface rust off, however there is some pitting.

I would like to get the pits out (if even possible) and then refinish

I am open to options

Pref want to use someone in the Maryville, Knoxviile, or surrounding areas.

Predator would be an excellent choice.

Depends on how "restored" you are looking for. The gold standard for firearm restoration is Turnbull Restorations. They are expensive but do some amazing work. I would say they usually reserved for family heirlooms, Grandpa's old WWI guns, etc...

On that History Channel "Pawn Stars" show, there have been several guys come in to sell an antique gun and they told em, "If you hadn't steel-wooled off all the rust and corrosion and replaced the broken parts it would have been worth a zillion dollars to a collector, but now that you have made it look pretty it is worthless." Guess it depends on whether the gun is old or rare enough to be "most valuable" in an ugly corroded state?

Look up Parker and sons in Strawberry plains.

He is the best bluing expert in our area. He has limited hours now but has been bluing firearms for over 40 years non stop.

What kind of pistol is it? Bowen isn't far from you, but you'd have to mortgage your house to pay for it.

Hamilton Bowen does great work, good teacher as well. I've taken his class on single actions a couple of times.

As Lester mentioned, make sure it isn't a collectible, restoration in a lot of cases can ruin the value of the gun. I know its wierd, but collectors want those things in "as-is" condition. Got pics or info on the gun?

You can soak it in white vinegar to get rid of the rust but this will remove the blueing or browning also. If it is badly pitted then you will need to remove some metal. Be careful. Whatever you do can reduce the value of a collectable rapidly. Sometimes its best to just clean and stop the deteriation process.

just an update on this...over the span of about 4 days, after work I would take cleaning patched and gun oil and rub the gun down. over and over.

the surface rust all came off and no bluing or finish was taken off.

obviously there are some "blemishes" from where the rust is....and the small micro pitting is still there...

it looks A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE just having the rust gone

i have passed the gun on to someone else who would appreciate it more than i am able to.

the new owner liked the finish as it came out...says the wear on it just tells the story of the gun.

He was happy to have it so thats all that matters...
