A Wild Wildcat 458 SOCOM

With the AR15 there are many different caliber uppers that will fit the AR lower. These all run rather well with limitations to the mag and mag-well size.

Then came the AR10. The same AR platform just beefed up to allow the 308 round to fit. To include a bigger mag-well and bolt (BCG)

How about a 458 SOCOM MAG round. I will call it the 458 SOMAG.

This upper could be made and would fit the AR10 or 308 AR lowers.

The image below shows a 308 round on the right to show the length to compare and 458 SOCOM in the middle. The made up 458 SOMAG is the one on the left.

I took a 300 WIN MAG case and cut the neck off. I then did a crude yet small neck size down so it would hold the 458 bullet. A proper sizing die would do much better. I thought of this looking at the way you cut down 223 ammo to make the 300 BLK with a 308 bullet.

Now imagine if someone could make the upper and a bolt to fit this cut down 300 WIN MAG. With the case capacity Im not sure how it would fire but Im sure it would be more than a "Magnum" blast.

Maybe one could even trim the rim down on the 300 WIN MG case to the 308 size so the 308 AR bolt would work.

Ok Im done dreaming.......... But this might be doable or might not.

The AR-10 actually came first. The AR is most likely going to be limited to what the bolt can handle. I think you're talking about a .458 winchester magnum that's shortened some.

While insanity seems to be prevailing, why not try chambering a shortened .50 BMG in the platform? I doubt you would shoot it more than once. When I lived in Memphis, I had a friend who was a Vietnam vet. He went to the Colorado Gunsmith School on his G.I. Bill. He said that in order to graduate each student had to build a custom rifle from scratch. A guy in his class built a single shot bolt action rifle chambered for the .50 BMG. The guy then fired it one time from the prone position and it broke his shoulder.

Muzzle brakes are fantastic devices when applied properly. The Armalite AR50 is a single shot, bolt action 50 BMG rifle that you can shoot all day with no issues.

I like Jeff's concept of design, especially since all of us that run the 458 could then load the bigun or the really bigun but alas, I think this will be a quiet wildcat if it ever comes to exist.

Some AR50 pron for your viewing pleasure in the interlude

Dont have calipers handy but why not just blow the .308 out straight walled and stick a .458 bullet in it..

wish I still had the dummies I made:

Back in the early 90's I fired some .308s out of my Garand by accident and thought it looked like a .45-70 so I took them home and loaded a 405 gr. Lead .45-70 slug and thats where it ended..thought a .451x51 would be a great brush gun.

not sure what you would get for velocity but it could be fun to play with.

A rimless case that big, without a shoulder will not play nice. It's been tried.
