Thought I overheard a range officer at Desoto Rifle Club, which is right near where this happened, that the caliber used was 7.62x39, which would indicate an AK knockoff or SKS. I don't know, that could be speculation.

Obviously looks like the m.o. is late at night, when the roads are pretty deserted. I don't think the guy would be so brazen to do this in daylight. If you drive in this area at night, be careful and keep one in the chamber.

It's pretty messed up. I figure it's either gang initiation or a sicko acting alone.

Hopefully he/they will be caught soon. As one of the range officers at Desoto, I'll be more alert while traveling in the area.

I've heard this advice for years. "Turn on your flashers, acknowledge the officer, drive to a well-lit area".

I have a suspicion that that's going to invite a "felony stop" with guns drawn and the driver walking backward toward the officer's voice. Or worse, the driver being dragged out of the seat, slammed to the ground and handcuffed.

Any relevant experience here? Do LEO's respect driver's cautions? Or do they get annoyed and pull their sidearms?

If you have serious doubt about the car pulling you over, you can do exactly as you said...but during that time, call 911 and ask if they have an officer in the area and let them know you had doubts. The operator will either ease your fears and tell you the cop is real or will give you instructions on how to avoid being pulled over by the impersonating officer.

This is what I was going to recommend.

If it were indeed a 7.62, I'd be willing to bet it was actually a 7.62x25 Tokarev.
