How to get rid of Copperheads?

My dad has lived at the same place for 20 years and up until the last couple of years we never had to worry about snakes. He almost got bit today working in the garden and he is ready to get rid of them. I saw some stuff online at lowes called Dr. T's. Does anybody know of anything else that will keep them away?

I have always heard mothballs would keep snakes away. we always put them around the edge of our yard and rarely see any snakes in the yard

I used to spray the exterior primeter of the yard with diesel fuel, it is supposed to burn thier belly when the try to cross it. It worked great for me but it was kinda funny that the nieghbors started seeing more in and around thier hous, nieghbor was a exinlaw I didnt quite care for.

Not sure about keeping them away, but a .410, a shovel and closed lips does wonders for taking care of them once they're there. (Not that I would know anything about anything remotely deemed to be illegal, but that's what I've been told...)

Get ducks. My wife watched one kill a copperhead when we lived in LA. I did a serch online, before posting this, and there are several references to ducks killing snakes.

I also know that none of native Tennessee snakes attacks human. Copperhead does not even protect her eggs

There's not really such a thing as a snake that "doesn't attack humans". Any snake will strike if it feels threatened. That being said, Copperhead envenomation is very rare, and deaths by Copperhead pretty much non-existant. It's a very mild venom, relatively speaking. Anyway, anything that has a very strong or fumous odor will work as it overloads the snake's senses and they stay away from it.

Find out what the snakes are after, get rid of that, and the snakes will go away. My in-laws had copperheads in their basement. We quite readily discovered that the snakes were there to eat the mice. The mice were eating the dog food and bird seed. Got rid of the dog food and bird seed, no more snakes.

Hire some cats, they will kill or run off the snakes.

i have learned more about snakes on here than i need to know. thats why i carry a 44 spl 2 inch i dont like them if they get too close they get a 200 grain full wad cutter

I'm not hijacking this thread, but since we are on the subject of snakes, this bad boy was caught in our chicken pen. The little one came running tinto the house yelling "pawpaw, icken nake'! (Kid talk for chicken snake I guess). It had ahold of one of our banty hens. He measured out at 73 inches in length and 11 inches around. He had 10 rattles. Was the first rattler I have ever seen here. Unfortunetly he had to removed as we have lost several chickens probably to this snake, and was a danger to my dogs and other animals. I let snakes go their own way and harm none, but this was an exception, as was a copperhead that got into the kennel with my rabbit dogs.

NOTE: The hunting of snakes is not permitted in the state of Tennessee. However, by law, your are permitted to "protect" your pets, livestock and self from reptiles. This is not going to be a debate. Just merely the sharing of experiences.
