No seat belts in 42% of fatal police car crashes

Recommended Posts

My car, my rules. Your car, your rules. Any passenger in my vehicle wears a seatbelt, or they can find another mode of transportation. If I were to get in someone's car and they said no seatbelt, I would get out of the car and find an alternate method of travel.

There you have it.

There's no miracle "life saver" that comes standard in any vehicle. Yes, I can think of a couple of people involved in crashes I've investigated that I could send you to and they could tell you how they would probably be dead had they been buckled up. However, I can think of three times as many who would tell you how they wished that they had buckled up. Well, they can't actually tell you, but maybe their family could.

All I know is from what I've seen in real life in my line of work. I don't base my decisions off of my best friend's cousin's half-brother's babysitter telling me about being thrown from a horrendous crash to safety and surviving only because she wasn't wearing a seat belt. Hell, it could be true - there are no guarantees in car crashes. I base my decision on what I've personally seen leading up to having to knock on someones door and ask them if I can come in and if they can have a seat so I can deliver some bad news.

Everyone here is grown. Don't like seat belts? Don't wear 'em. Don't like the law on 'em? Contact your lawmakers. I'm not gonna preach to you that you should wear them if you're already dead set against them. I'm also not going to yell at you for not wearing blaze orange during rifle season while you're deer hunting, not wearing gloves when giving blood transfusions to HIV patients, not wearing a hard hat on the construction site, or for tasting the strange white powder that showed up in the mystery envelope. Your decisions are yours. So, too, are the consequences. An orange vest may not stop some moron from shooting me during deer season and a seat belt may hurt me more than help me in 10% of the crashes I could experience, but I find myself trying to tilt the odds into my favor whenever possible. YMMV
