Honor Flight

I'm not posting this to get a pat on the back but to get some of you involved in a worthwhile endeavor for our veterans. I got way more out of this than I put in and I think you will too. This past Saturday I had the honor of accompaning a group of WWII and Korean War vets on a flight to visit their memorial, Tomb of the Unknown, and other veteran sights in DC. As a Guardian I was priveledged to help make their trip a great memory. We had a 92 year old and a nearly 90 female WWII Marine--drove a truck so some guy could be on the frontline. Some of tbhe tales they all can tell will amaze you. Check out www.honorflight.org and see if you can join a group in your area. If you can't afford to pay your way maybe you can spare some money to help them cover their costs--the trips are free for the vets. Like I said at the start, don't thank me, thank a vet by helping Honor Flight to honor them.

Excellent cause for sure. I was in the terminal one evening for their return, the looks on their faces when they were greeted with cheers and songs by a nice crowd of people was a very memorable experience for me.

I think they depart at 8 am, Tuesday morning at gate B6 if anyone is flying out. Also there is an "Armed Forces Day" May 19 11am-1pm at Charlie Daniels Park in Mt. Juliet.

Nashville Honor Flight departs this morning. I hope they have a grfeat sendoff. I know the reception and visit will be great for them. I went as part of the Southern Middle TN on Saturday, leaving from Huntsville Airport--cheaper tickets and less hassle than BNA. There were three other groups there that day--NW Arkansas, Buffalo, and Long Island. Sad to say that there is no group in the eastern or western part of TN listed on the main website.

I saw a group of them while in DC last year. That's a great tribute to our veterans. I was in awe of those folks.

Thanks for that link, also. I made a donation in memory of my father.

So I went through BNA this morning on my way up to Cleveland. Noticed several of the Honor Flight guys, and thought, "cool, I'll get to pay my respects."

Imagine my surprise when I went through TSA to see the "secondary screening" area completely jam packed with sailors and airmen all in their Class A's getting the full treatment from the TSA. These were service members escorting the Honor Flight guys.

It made me so mad I wanted to spit. I mean, really?

The worst part of this jobs program disguised as security theater is that they really take themselves this seriously.

There is a group that operates out of Knoxville. They use the name Honor Air. They fly out of TYS about once a month or so.

I had hoped to head over to the mall today, but got caught up in meetings. I hope those that made the trip enjoyed their visit to the memorials. Of the recently added memorials and planned memorials the WWII memorial is the only one they got right.
