Beeman air rifle

Couldn't find anything, so... I have a very nice Beeman Sportsman RS2 air rifle, the kind that cocks with one break of the barrel... how long can it be kept charged without damage? Anyone know?

Not very long. The spring will take a set, or so I am told.

Ok, after further research, it seems the hunters will leave theirs cocked for hours on end while in the woods. Just don't forget to uncock it. Guys that want to "detune" their rifle, or make it shoot slower, will cock it and leave it cocked for weeks until the spring weakens to the velocity they want.

Thanks so much. I was just wondering if it would be ok to have it ready for an hour or so. This damn woodpecker has been working on my house, and I wasn't sure if I could keep it ready for an hour or so, if I had to get it off in 5 minutes...

Spring steel will not "take a set" provided its elastic limits are not exceeded. That is, it isn't compressed too much or stretched too far. All springs sack out a bit as they break in but beyond that, if it's properly engineered to the task and made from good spring steel, it couldn't care less how long it's compressed. Cycling is what wears out springs, not static load, otherwise the coil springs on your car's shock absorbers would go bad while it's sitting in the garage.

I have a Beeman R9 that stays cocked, sometimes for weeks on end. I've lost count of how many times it's been left cocked for a week or more, then I've picked it up on the spur of a moment to blast a starling at 30-40 yards, which I almost invariably hit on the first shot. I've had that rifle about eight years and it's endured this same abuse since day one. I haven't chronographed it in a while but that I can consistently hit such a small target at that range -- without adjusting the scope even once since I switched to the current pellet -- tells me its MV hasn't suffered much.

That said, the RS2 and the other lower-priced Beemans are made in the PRC. The R9 is made in Germany. Can't say how the quality of their springs compares.

Well, there you go Mikey. Two different opinions. Take your pick. I don't leave my Gamo Big Cat cocked for more than a few minutes and it still Chrono's like new. The research I did was from forums that guys were chronographing their rifles and seemed to be very serious about it.

I have the RS1 and was told not to leave it cocked over 10 minutes

On my Crosman break-barrel I don't leave it cocked unless I know I'm going to shoot it within a few minutes.

I have an RWS 34 and never leave it tight for more than a day , it's about 12 years old , never a problem.

I would consider it factual when you chronograph your rifle and show us that it hasn't lost any velocity by staying cocked for long periods of time.
