Laws About Open Land Shooting

While I enjoy my time shooting at CHMR, there's a part of me that would like to shoot at something other than targets once in a while. I haven't been able to find any info on what the laws are on shooting in large open spaces in TN, everything references hunting. I was driving through the state the other day and saw TONS of large, open areas and was wondering if you could go and set up a few objects to shoot at. Any ideas?

I'm in kind of in the same boat. I really enjoy the environment Charlie has going on there, but I too would love to shoot something a bit more interactive than sporting clays from time to time.

The fact that I've got a box of tannerite just sitting in my closet isn't helping matters any.

Even a good silhouette range would be an excellent addition.

if its not your property then probably no

This is why I'm in the market for secluded land in east TN. Unfortunately most of it is on a 45 degree incline.

Welcome to Tn. The city folk get all the flat land.

Two sides with 45 degree inclines means it's easy to shoot longer or shorter ranges!! Mountains make excellent backstops, too!

As long as you have permission from the owner and there is not any municipal laws against firing a firearm you should be fine. I wonder about shooting on public land? Like the Cherokee national forrest? I know of a couple trails that no one is ever really on that would be easy to find a spot.

Yeah, I have been to Scioto before. I didn't feel safe there really. I don't think I'll be going back.

There are several ranges in the Cherokee.

I used to go to Bubbling Springs, the closest outdoor range to where I live. About an hour and twenty minutes drive. The last several trips, I spent more time waiting to shoot than I did shooting. When I combine the wait time to the nearly three hours behind the wheel, the entire day is shot (no pun intended). Leasing land for "hunting" has become nearly impossible. I'm willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars for someplace of my own where I can go and know that when I get there I can start firing away. Maybe even invite some of my TGO friends. :D

I hope you don't actually think trespassing someone's land while being armed and shooting at things is a good idea... Where do you live again? :ugh:

There are such things as public lands.......

Yes, but most do not allow target shooting outside of designated range areas. Have I done it anyway? Yes, but it's still not allowed.

If you're near the Cherokee you can find a secluded place.
