That story doesn't mention it, but he's only going to be put into the institution until he's ruled competent, then he will stand trial.

When I worked at the psychiatric hospital there was a fella who seemed pretty normal. Ferinstance I never won a game of chess against him, though I'm not a good chess player. The typical patient, it doesn't take Dr. Freud to figure out in a couple of minutes that they are in bad shape.

So I asked him why he was in the hospital, and he replied that he had killed his girlfriend and pretended to be crazy to stay out of jail. That basic plan probably isn't very good, because unless they had hung the guy for murder then he would most likely eventually get out of jail, but the hospital could keep him as long as some random psychiatrist still thinks it is a good idea.

So anyway I asked him how he killed his girlfriend and he said with a gun, a knife, and a clawhammer. So then I started thinking maybe he wasn't so "normal" after all, and the fella probably wasn't merely "pretending to be crazy."
