Ate another potato chip today (new Mosin)

I picked up another Mosin Nagant today. 1936 from the Izhevsk factory. Trigger is very stiff and the bolt is easy to work, really nice condition. One thing I am wondering about though is the color fill on the rear sights and serial number. Was this done after the war or was this done before and just omitted to save time and money later on?

Not sure if anyone really knows why that is but I like it.

Is there a /25\ stamped on it?

Where did you get it and where is the importer's mark?

Where would the 25 be stamped? Importer put their mark on the left side of the receiver, darn Century, noticeable as anything. Bought it form a guy on GOC.

Congratulations on the new Mosin. I just can't figure out what it has to do with potato chips.

They say Mosin Nagants are like potato chips, can't have just one. Edited by gjohnsoniv

Whoever you bought it from prolly used a crayon to fill in the elevation marks.

As for tator chips i agree. One Mosin is the same as the next. No clue why anyone needs more than one.

Enough said. I have two. One for each hand. ;)

I really don't care about the elevation marks but they caught my attention once I looked at it when I got back. Well as far as tater chips go I was going to use this one for a project gun, but it's really nice so I might not.

no one knows why they made some like that. some of mine have it on the markings under the stock so you have to take it out to see it.rp_004.jpg

Maybe it is dried up cosmoline

It's not. I've seen many reports of the color fill recently and kinda like it. Might have to go get a crayon this weekend and do mine.

It's not bad looking at all.

they call them "Red Letter 91/30's" and some places will even charge more for them??

not sure that the up-charge is qualified? but...it does look neat and gives me a reason to buy another!

and for those who dont understand why we 91/30 collectors have more than 1, here is on reason....

SUPPLEMENTAL RETIREMENT!!! ha ha ha...my FIL used to buy these for 60-70 bucks now they are, on average, selling for $115-$125. some even more. and the more he sits on them the more the values go up. Just look at the K98's....same thing!

Well they like charging more for something that is "rare" even though that's a relative term when talking about multiple-millions of the things.

But out of every 10 sold, 1 will be wrecked by a moron with a hacksaw. Another will be messed up by neglect. A third will have been in poor shape to begin with when imported. In 20 years, 2 of the 10 will still be unchanged. In 50 years, 1 of 50 may still be in good condition and between inflation, demand, and attrition, they will start to go up in value significantly. I would bet on it: in 30-50 years those mosins will be worth more than double what you paid, we have seen this time and time again with the guns that we once thought we had millions of in excess. There are still millions of garands out there, and yet they command a price from 500 and up now, with better ones going for nearly a grand.

This is true. I'm back to trying to find another for my project. Thankfully I'm not one of those people who takes a hacksaw to something without thinking, I take pride in my work.
