The mark adjacent to the serial number on the frame is the Nitro proof mark (looks like an eagle with an N underneith), which means it has been tested for use with smokeless powder.

It should be stamped made in West Germany on the right side of the slide under the P228. (left side will likely have Exeter if it was imported through there) If it has no markings for either I believe those may have been special runs of guns made for Swiss Police.

I don't have mine in front of me at the moment, but IIRC the proof marks for the city where it was built will be underneith the barrel stamped into the front hood of the frame.

You will be able to find the various proof marks in here http://www.shotguns....ml/germany.html

Helps to know the year of manufacture.

The box is red it is a certified pre owned, what is CPO?

Certified Pre Owned or CPO for short

It's a Sig that has been refurbished by Sig Sauer and resold. Some people love them others not so much. They are often a good value, but only have a 1 year warranty.
