I agree with your sentiment, but I don't see this bill passing. Now, after the election, I could see an Obama

second term allowing DOT to push regulations, like he used the EPA to regulate carbon with no authorizing

legislation. His minions are busy turning us into Utopia without the benefit of oversight.

In 2015 you won't need the damn boxes, you don't need them in 2012. Everyone rolls with a smartphone that is more than capable of recording all that stuff.

What the gov, and some people, haven't realized is that you don't have to spy on people. You just have to listen and they give their privacy right up.

SO you cram this box in someone's car and you learn they hit eighty on I-75. You could look at their twitter feed and find them bragging that they actually hit ninety.

I can't tell who is going to win the race, the government who wants to destroy your privacy because you might do something bad or individuals who want to destroy their privacy because someone might retweet it.

Kinda not funny too, but TV's are all becoming "smart tv's". They are basically a computer dressed as a TV.

My tinfoil hat tells me that the capability will be built right into them where the gooberment will be able to see your every move as you watch American Idol or Fox News.

Masking tape on the laptop and pad puter and cellphone cameras is kinda difficult to hack via software. That doesn't defeat all tracking but at least there is no video feed, at least from cameras you know about.

My TV is so dumb it still has a CRT tube. Don't watch much TV anyway. If people want to be watched its their own biz, doesn't matter to me.

Cable tv that uses a "box", am guessing the cable company knows what channel you are tuned to all the time. If the box is smart enough to handshake with the office to enable "tier 2 programming" or whatever, it is smart enough to report what channel it is tuned to. It doesn't know whether you are watching, unless maybe they would have cameras in the cable boxes.

I've never researched whether the cable company records and uses household viewing habits, but if they can get the data it would seem foolish not to use it, for evaluating popularity of the different channels if nothing else?

On the assumption that they meter popularity info in this way, I'll tune away from shows I don't like even if I'm not watching or listening, to make sure the show doesn't get extra ratings just from the box being tuned to that channel. The TV is usually on, but I rarely watch it or un-mute the sound. If the TV happens to be on Fox News and I happen to notice that idiot O'Reilly comes on, I tune to AMC to make sure O'Reilly doesn't accidentally get a ratings boost just because the TV was tuned to Fox News by default.

So let see if I understand this. I have to strap myself in my car, law, drive behind a bag set to go off at any time, law and now I have to have a box telling whoever where I am and when. “Mandatory Event Data Recorders†to be installed in all new automobiles and legislates for civil penalties to be imposed against individuals for failing to do so." new law.

If it is like the data recorders that have already been in many passenger vehicles for over a decade and commercial vehicles even longer the data recorder is built into the engine management computer. You can remove it but the car won't run.

There is a ton of data already being saved in your car unless you are driving something that was built before electronic engine management.

A state Trooper who worked commercial motor vehicle fatal crashes told me about this several years ago. He would get a search warrant for the vehicles engine management computer and most of the time was able to recover all of the data from time of impact including vehicle speed as well as information prior to the crash.

So, the black box thing has been around for a very long time just not on a mandatory basis.
