The wheels of change are a turning...

Today I did two things that would shock most people who know me.

#1 -- I unpacked and set up my new Apple MacBook Pro laptop. As someone who has made their living with the initials MCSE, MCDBA and MCSP behind his name for the past ten years or so this is actually a pretty big deal. Microsoft has been good to me and has paid for a lot of things, but I've had it with the direction they are taking with their desktop OS. My new personal computer is a Mac. Eat that, Ballmer!!!

#2 -- I ordered a new kydex body from Comp-Tac for the spare MTAC holster that I had laying around. My HK P2000 will keep it's MTAC, but the 1911 is now carried in a Milt Sparks VM2. So the new kydex body? It fits a Glock.

;)

I figure sooner or later I'm going to end up with a Glock 19. Might as well have something to carry it in. :D

I have thought that the next computer I purchase for the house will be a MAC. I too have spent years with Microsoft and am currently working on more certifications, but hey, who knows, maybe one day.

I'm voting for Obama too. And wearing Birkenstocks. :D

Just kidding.

Eddie, you being a Ubutnu user would appreciate the Unix underpinnings in OS-X. That was the big factor that made me switch. Intel platform running a Unix derivative with a quality GUI and a big name vendor backing it all up? Winnar!

I'm slowly moving more of our servers at work to RedHat Enterprise Linux and off of Windows. I doubt Server 2008 will ever see the light of day here. ;)

I am in IT, working on some of those same sets of letters. I use a Macbook Pro at home, and I shoot Glocks. You are a smart man Tungsten.

Yeah, but what will you do with you MCDBA?

I haven't done anything with my DBA certification since 1999. I manage two MS SQL servers here at my company but they are small potatoes to what I had to do when I worked for First American. ;)

Oracle on RHE is supposed to be the bomb. I may have to try it out sometime. :D

You'll love that mac!

I've been using macs (at work) since System 7. Loath PeeCees.

Ever since they went Unix they have been rock solid. My house has

been "PC" free for about 6 years.

A MAC and a 9mm, oh my goodness, what's next becoming a Democrat?

Get a GLOCK 23 for the MAC, high speed-higher power.;)

What ever makes you happy!:D

I have been a Mac guy since grade school. I have a circa 1984 Mac 512C set up in my computer room that still functions(albeit uselessly) perfectly. My kids have my old 733GHZ G4 Powermac and we(grown-ups) use the 24" intel based imac.

Glock!? .......for shame:cool:

First, let's get one thing STRAIGHT... I am not a Glock owner.;)

Second, I am hetrosexual. Now married to wife 3 for 13 years. :panic:

Third, A Mac is the only PC I've ever owned.

Among others, I've still got an old Motorla StarMax 5500 clone booted up and running OS 7.6 It has been humming along virtually 24/7 for 11 years . It makes a great fax machine.

Sounds pretty questionable to me. :panic:

Are you sure you don't own Glock? ;)

Hey Tungsten, I was in Eastside today and Bill just so happens to have a Glock 19 in there at a very decent price that I am sure would follow you home. Just add some XS Big Dots and it would be a Yeager:hiding: approved carry package!

Macs are great. If you have to get it fixed though, be careful with the guys at the genius bar. They have the attitude of a computer nerd and an apple fan-boy put together. Ouch.

MAC... Say it isn't so!?!?!

Why not Linux? Anything but the hippie puter!?!?!?

Actually I have heard some good stuff about the most resent Mac puters and they finally have some descent software available for it.

You mean there's a point to an MCDBA other than to pad your resume while you learn Oracle? *boggles*

Oracle on RHE is God's gift to DBAs to keep them from going insane dealing with the spawn of Satan... I mean MS SQL.

I never said there was no use for having your MCDBA. I just said I haven't used it in several years. :D The few small SQL databases we have at my current employer (<50 employees) really aren't worth mentioning. I could just as easily host them on a MySQL box and no one would ever know the difference; except one of them is for our MS-branded accounting system and that might cause problems.

Oracle is definitely worth learning. I know several people who have made careers doing nothing but Oracle. Oracle DBA, Oracle Forms Admin, Oracle development... you name it. Each one a completely viable career path in and of itself.

Leopard (OS X 10.5.2) is *NIX under the hood. :D

That's the biggest reason I took the plunge and went with the Mac Book. Sure, I could have tried to run Ubuntu or some other Linux on my Thinkpad but there's no telling what challenges that would have involved. I deal with enough challenges in our infrastructure at work. For home or on the road, I just wanted a laptop I didn't have to screw with. I wanted one that just works.

I think I've found it. :D

Until I can install the latest First Person Shooter on a Mac I'll be sticking with Windows. Vista plays Crysis well. Although I do have 6GB of ram.
