So now i just need help on deciding which one to purchase. I am looking at the rossi and have heard they are hit and miss as some are lemons and some are amazing! I really like my Marlin 1894. The only problem I have found with it is that it eats up ammo.

I love my 1894 Marlin in 44 mag. I imagine one in 357 would be just as good. If I were in the market for one, I'd consider looking for a Marlin. I'd also consider a model 92 Winchester or 92 Browning. I'd only want one of the older, pre safety models.

The pre safety models is my other question. If i get one with a safety i have heard someone makes a kit to eliminate the safety.

The someone who replaces the safety is Steve Young. He also does a helluvan action job (I can highly recommend). He will, if you like, get a factory new carbine or rifle, get it running beautifully, replace the safety (and the plastic mag plug) and ship it to your ffl.

I'm in Mooresburg now - about 12 miles west of Rogersville. If you want to head over this way you can try one of Steves' '92's - a stainless carbine (.357/38).

I've had this one for 6 or 8 years. Never had any issues at all. PM me if you want to try it out, see if Steve's work suits you.

I recently bought a Henry Big Boy level action rifle in .357. It feeds 38 special flawlessly too. I love this rifle and it seems to be a big hit at the range. You load it through the tube like a tube fed 22, which I didn't think I would like but it's actually easier than loading each round through the trap door. The octagonal barrel is heavy and it kind of makes it off balance (barrel heavy) compared to the Marlin but shooting it is a dream. Even with hot Black Hills .357 loads the recoil is mild. With 38 Special it just goes "POOF".

Here is a good article of the .357 magnum lever action.

I've got a Rossi/Puma 92 and LOVE it. It is by far my favorite rifle. Mine is the pre-safety version. It eats pretty much any ammo I feed it and with the hotter, Cor-Bon or Buffalo Bore ammo, it's pushing mid range 30-30 ballistics. IMO it is an ideal personal defense carbine. Light weight, easy to carry, easy to shoot, lots of available ammo, .357 is great for most game, and can be loaded down for smaller game with the .38. Add to it the reliabilty of the lever action and it's also an incredibly fun gun to shoot.

I have a pre-crossbolt safety model 1894 Marlin in 357 Magnum and have found it to one of the best used gun buy's I've made. If I ever find another older Marlin in 44 magnum w/o the crossbolt safety that is priced within my means I'll purchase it as well. The Henry rifle's I've seen so far have been 22 LR and looked great.
