It looks like my uncle is going to give me a 50cal muzzelloader but the problem is he says the barrel inside looks to be very rusted. I know if they werent properly cleaned after every shoot they can do this. My question: Is there any hope in cleaning the rust out? I havent seen it myself nor do i know what or if he has even tried to clean it out yet...

You may be able to remove the breech plug, which would make things considerably easier. Try using Iossol bore cleaner - it is mildly abrasive. Good luck!

so i got it and tore it down to day and it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be but it was bad. it took about 2 or 3 hours to clean it and it is looking good now. Maybe I can kill me a deer this winter now  thanks for the advice the Bore cleaner worked like a champ

MODS by the way thanks for moving the thread. I never paid attention that there was a black powder section....

I would also recommend finding a patch lube that will season the barrel. I use a lard and beeswax mixture. After enough shots, the barrel will be seasoned (like a cast iron skillet) and make loading and cleaning a lot easier.
