Honey

I have to share this cause it is awesome. Honey is the best burn salve!

I burned myself a couple of weeks ago. 1st degree but dangit it hurt and it kept hurting.

Ran my fingers under cool water (cause that's what I burned, both hands) that took the sting away as long as my fingers were under water. Then I got prunish.

So I have some lidocaine, tried that and for about 10 minutes I was pain free. Still ouch!

So I tried a burn lotion with lidocine and aloe. Good for about 5 minutes.

My wife got tired of hearing me whine so she said she would go to the pharmacy and get me something. But what?

So using what googlefu I could muster with burned fingers I found this..... Not from some freaky Internet whack but the NIH (National Institute of Health)

Topical application of honey in treatment of burns.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2032114

I had just gotten some raw unfiltered local honey ( All honey is not created equal and some honey isn't even honey http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2011/11/tests-show-most-store-honey-isnt-honey/ ) because I have been trying it for my allergies (works amazingly well) So I washed the other junk off and put it on the burn. Pain free for the rest of the night and the next morning it was still pain free with nothing on it.

Also for treatment of infection there is this:

Honey: a reservoir for microorganisms and an inhibitory agent for microbes

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2269714/

and this

Antibacterial activity of honey against strains of Staphylococcus aureus from infected wounds.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1297205/

My conclusion is raw unfiltered honey (local preferred) is a must have around the house and could be a super addition to the BOB (in-spite of the risks of it leaking) and is one of the most versatile of survival medications.

I pick up my first hive at the end of the month. I recommend those interested in honey do a little research on honey bees and beekeeping. There is quite a bit of misinformation and rumors about bees. Bees can be kept in most urban, suburban, or rural areas with a little planning. Its great for the environment, provides a wonderful treat, and is a good hobby.
