My father left me a colt revolver official police. 38 special. Looking into the rarity and what police depts issued these. My father wasn't a cop but my grandfather on my mothers side was. He never told me where he got it or anything so I was just interested to find out some stuff on it.

I have one that was an uncles. You will enjoy shooting it. Spoils you for other revolvers even new Smiths.

I have a smith 686 I have shot it but never fired the colt. Not really big into revolvers but it seems to be a well built and balanced peice of history I guess lol

It has a serial number but id rather not post it publicly. Maybe in a pm to someone willing to discuss it a little more privately

These were the offical service weapons of most law enforcement agencies during that period - until Smith & Wesson took over. Not a rare find, but it's a Colt.

I have a 1956 4" that belonged to my grandfather. As has been said they will spoil you with their smooth double and crisp single action.

Many times revolvers bought by agency's will have a separate number on the bottom of the grip that can aid in identification. You can try typing your serial number along with "colt official police" and a few web pages should pop with some info on dating.

IMHO, these are not worth selling if they hold any family history, the pricing is up and down and they made probably millions of these over the years.

Wither way, once again IMHO the colt letter is a VERY good idea, especially if you may sell. Good condition department guns may fetch a premium with some collectors allowing you to make up the price difference of the letter. Personally I would spend about $50 more for one with the letter than one without all else being equal.

If you decide to sell... Holla at me!

(MODS: if I am breaking a rule with a potential buy offer , PLEASE let me know so I may moddify this post)

I have a Police Positive with four inch barrel. The SN puts mine at 1942. Beautiful fit and finish, still.

One more little bit of info for ya, the inner workings on the OP are apparently very similar to those of the much lusted for colt python. Not being a true expert or having owned a python, I can't be any more specific but the info is out there....

TNWNGR, I agree everyone should have at least one and I wouldnt mind a bakers dozen.
