U.S. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne says it's time to take a "fresh look" at the long-held ban against bringing loaded weapons into national parks and wildlife areas.

Kempthorne will soon issue new rules, subject to public comment, that could loosen those restrictions to more closely resemble the gun laws of the states where the federal sites are located.

Gun advocates, including the National Rifle Association, and 51 U.S. senators urged the review, including Republican Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina.

Seven former directors of the National Park Service, the Association of National Park Rangers and park advocacy organizations such as the National Parks Conservation Association oppose a change.

Kempthorne defended the review Monday before addressing a "sustainable tourism" conference in Knoxville.

Would this make it legal to carry in wildlife refuges? This is not a park and I would think is not covered in the Tennessee laws as a place where we cannot carry so I would think this would be OK.

How about LBL in KY? Would it fall under this? Part of LBL is in Tennessee so until something changes in here it would not be legal but I think park carry is legal in KY but I don't know if LBL is a park or if it is something else altogether. Also if it would be legal in KY how would they work that with half being legal and the other half not? Any chance they would go ahead and make it legal all over LBL?

Not sure that your correct about the LBL. It is policed by feredal officers so this may be a good thing for us.

This got me thinking. What do you guys think would happen if every time a one of us goes into a park in Tn we call the local LEO's and ask for an escort while we are there.

If you explain that you don't feel safe and since the state refuses the right to carry there then they should have to provide protection right?

Hahaha good thinking. Carrying in a park under current law is one of those situations where the consequences of not carrying a gun far outweigh the legal issues of getting in trouble for having one. Take that as you will.

According to a new article in the Morristown Citizen Tribune Senator Alexander won't support this change. Sorry can't find a link for this.

"Don Barger, regional director for the National Parks Conservation Associations, worries that the easing of gun restrictions will increase poaching. He also said the low crime rate in parks can't justify the need for greater access to guns for personal safety.

" ' the current regulation is reasonable and necessary,' he said.

"U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who maintains a home near the Smokies, agrees.

" 'President Reagan adopted rules about guns in parks in the early 1980's, which allow them under some circumstances," Alexander said. ' I haven't seen any need to change those rules.' "

Tim, I saw a reference to this somewhere today. This is outrageous. I searched for, but could not find an online reference.

I think we need to come down hard on Alexander on this.

If you fine a source for this comment by Alexander, please let me know. Alexander has never been very popular. Maybe it's time to let him know that?

The KNS article is dated 9 Feb 2008 ("Likewise, U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., a supporter of the parks and gun-owner's rights, has not decided on the ban.") while the Citizen Tribune article was 30 April 2008 (yesterday) so I'm guessing the RINO has made his decision.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I'm writing this with regards to the current issue of Handgun Carry in TN State Parks. I simply would like to recall to memory your quote from March 28th 2007 when you announced co-sponsoring Sen. Hutchinson's bill to repeal the D.C. Firearms Ban:

“Gun control should not mean taking away these rights from law-abiding citizens and leaving criminals to terrorize the streets,†Alexander said. “Good citizens don’t abuse guns; criminals do.â€

I encourage you to consistently apply this philosophy with regards to TN gun laws by simply replacing the word 'streets' with 'parks', in your quote. Please think about it.
