Recent information indicates the bill may be dead for this year but it would not hurt to continue to voice our support so I'm passing on the contents of an NRA email with what I feel is good information.

Drop a quick email to your Legislator if you support the Safe Commute Bills (a.k.a Guns in Parking Lots).

Access the website Tennessee House Members General Assembly website to plug in your address and zip code to find your Legislator:

http://www.capitol.t.../house/members/

Send them an email if you agree with what is being proposed:

Dear Senator ,,, I wanted to write to let you know that I strongly support HB 3560 and HB 3559.

I do believe this should be limited to current/valid Handgun Carry Permit holders.

HB 3560 is sponsored by state Representative Eddie Bass (D-65) and 29 other House members.

It prevents employers, other property owners and government entities from prohibiting Tennesseans from storing their legally possessed firearms out of sight in their locked private vehicle, as long as the vehicle is permitted to be on the property.

This would ensure that gun owners are able to defend themselves during their commute. Current parking lot prohibitions disarm good citizens during their entire commute, and this is a dangerous injustice that must be ended. The second bill, HB 3559, prevents employers from discriminating against employees or prospective employees based upon whether they choose to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Thank you for your representation

I did and just got the following response:

Hello John,

As you know, I have always supported items that pertain to the 2nd amendment and am a gun owner/carrier myself.

Since I have taken office, the restrictions on gun owner's rights have been dramatically stripped away, and less regulation is a good thing. The bill that you reference below is one of two or maybe three bills that will deal with this matter. I want to assure you that I will be looking at all of these bills and will support the one(s) that I feel best bolster the rights of individuals like yourself and property owners that will be affected as well.

The final language for each of these bills has not been finalized yet, but I urge you to keep an eye on their progress. Since all of the bills will be different in one small way or another, I encourage you to take a look at all of the bills and let me know your thoughts on each. ,

Thank you again for contacting me, and please let me know if there is anything further that I may assist you with.

Sincerely,

Debra Maggart

McCormick's Bill and Evan's Bill were taken off notice today, last man standing is HB 3560 and its companion HB 3559. 3560 was amended to narrow the scope to Handgun Carry Permit Holders only. Single family dwellings, nuclear reactors and Oak Ridge along with any Federally restricted areas which preclude possession of a firearm were set outside the parameters of the Bill.
