need help dating a sig

Where is a good place for a first date? Maybe that nice German restaurant?

I picked up a used P229 in a trade yesterday. Is anyone able to tell me when it was manufactured? Is it in fact german made, frame says so, and arent german made sigs a bit higher quality?

Frame has serial number of AF165xx.

Havent shot it yet but i love the feel of it. Its my first Sig.

I must be completely ignorant because i found no useful info to me on that page. At the top it says that af should be an 05 date but later on down it gives examples of af being a 95 and 96 date code so i dont know.

I have a feeling this is going to be my new favorite pistol

What you're looking at is the prefix for the serial number. Look under the barrel for the date code.

On right side of frame near muzzle it says

SIGARMS INC.EXETER NH-

FRAME P229 MADE IN GERMANY

Your frame is made in Germany, and the slide is made here. If the 229 was German made the slide, barrel and frame would all have serial numbers the match. The slide would be stamped made in Germany. If it was German made it would also have the marks under the slide like JeffSig posted.

Agree witht he previous post. I spent a lot of time back in February researching Sig serial numbers and proof marks on a prized West German P226 I recently acquired. What I found is this: If a gun is partially made and intended for the European market, it must have the proof marks of the manufactuor as per the European Gun Manufacturing treaty. Even the proof marks mean something, i.e. its safe and ready to be sold, etc. If a gun is partially manufactured with European parts, but is not wholly complete, and intended for another market like the U.S. then proof marks are not required (U.S. did not sign the treaty). So if you have Sig w/o proof marks, you have a pistol that has parts (frame) made in Germany and slide made in the U.S. Call Sig for your exact assembly date based upon model and serial number.
