Identify Chester's Wood

Hello Fellow Marksmen!

I bought my first lever action rifle the other day. His name is Chester. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what kind of wood the stock is.

He's Winchester 94ae .357...I'm trying to figure out if he's a Trapper or a Ranger. I was doing some research and forums have said the only difference is in the wood. Walnut is a Trapper and Birch is a Ranger. I also wondered if the way the saddle ring positioned tells anything.

Thanks for all the help!

How do you know that it's walnut?

I am by no means an expert or even know the correct wood-talking lingo but I'm pretty sure those little dark "speckles" you see throughout the grain indicate walnut. Birch does not have that, or at least to that degree.

American black walnut. Yours is the Trapper model. The ranger would have a very plain yellow stock. You have a fairly sought after piece there. If it's like most of them, you'll find it's a great shooter.

Thanks for the replies and welcome!

I'll think twice before buying something and not even knowing what model it is. Got lucky this time though I guess. Haha. =)
