Unusable brass

I am still new to reloading and keeping with the 45 colt. Some of the brass has been reloaded multiple times. I was thinking about it and wanted to know what most other reloaders do with their old, unusable brass? You know, the stuff that is cracked, bent, or otherwise just can't be reloaded anymore. Do you recycle it or turn it in for melting somewhere?

Pile it in a bucket. Sit on it until you have a 5 gallon bucket or more. Take it to your local scrap yard and sell it for clean yellow brass. It won't be much but it'll be enough to get you a container of Unique and some beer.

Personally, I've re-used numerous "bent" cases. If it resizes back out without cracking I'll use it for light target loads.

But that's just me!

Clean brass without primers is a good payday. But a new rule at the scrap yard that I visite. It must be over 30 pounds. You have to wait 4 days before getting paid.

Use that brass till you can't use it anymore. My rule on 38 spl. is 1/4" neck crack or a side split is not reloadable.

Well, I was referring to 45 ACP since it is the most commonly bent of any calibre. ANY side split is not reloadable IMHO. And 38 brass is way less precious than .45 IMHO.

2.35 per pound more if you take out the primers

dlm, Where do you take your brass? I've collected some and was wondering where the best place to take it around Nashville. Is it worth taking alum casings too?

Thanks,

Matt

asaxton was asking about 45 colt brass.

If you have a 38 and reload it is. If you don't have a 45, it's scrap.

I think i've only thrown away around 10 or 12 cases in the past year or so due to cracks and/or severely bent. On the other hand, I've tossed at least a hundred .22, .40, and .380 that have gotten mixed in with my 9x19, 9x18, and .32s.

How long before I'd have enough for a $20 bottle of powder? Anyone have a ballpark idea?

No clue to your shooting habit.
