Trail camera drafted for home defense??

Recommended Posts

We live in a neighborhood with really one major way in and out, and yet we are getting a lot of drive-by traffic after 10 in the evening and on the overnights, some of it loud with the thumping stereo and some of it quiet.

I've considered installing a trail-camera or two on a post in the front yard, maybe near the mailbox, maybe in a heavy glass box so it can't be easily stolen or vandalized. I'm kind of designing it in my head. I understand that a lot of them have an infra-red flash and are triggered by a motion sensor. I imagine ?? some have timers that can be set for hours on the overnight. Do any have wireless transmission of pictures?

I hate re-inventing the wheel, so, has anyone else done this kind of thing? How well does a trail camera work, and how would you pick one (or two, for the angles)? (Maybe I just want to run power to the mailbox area and mount a pair of security system video cameras with an encrypted wireless connection.

Are there any "privacy" issues - you know, real actual legal privacy issues? The cops often say that "nothing good happens after midnight" and there may be a good reason for folks coming and going down residential streets at odd hours, but I'm thinking that doesn't mean I don't have a right to know what's up.

Thoughts? Pictures? Stories?

Yes there are some that have the wireless transmission of pictures. It has to be within a certain distance though. Be careful with the legalities of "spying" on people not on your property.

If you are taking pictures of your property, the public road or anywhere they don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy. don't see where any problem could be.

Yeh, it took me a while to find it, Dan. That neighborhood is a maze.

One way in, one way out, traffic after 10:00 p.m. not a shortcut to walmart, sounds like a drug dealer back in there somewhere to me. Edited by gl19gobang
