Where Does All That Lead Go

I am curious, how do sporting clay businesses and other outdoor shooting ranges skirt the enviomental police? Are they legally exempt? Where does all that lead go?

I shoot alot of sporting clays, and I know a little about enviromental impacts that businesses and industry can have on the environment, and the serious repercussions in both government fines and real enviormental impacts for non-conpliances. My reasoning for the question, I know each time I have an sporting clays outing, I leave behin 7 lbs of lead. Do the math, that is a lot of lead left behind per person per outing per year. It can be into the 10+ tons of lead per year per course.

they get a large amount of money by digging it up and selling it!! Otherwise, I think the property has to be inspected so that the lead is not going over any open water or entering any drinking water sources?

indoor range I go to sold about a year and a half's worth and it was a significant amount of money. Lot of copper in the scrap too.

The lead and copper will crust over and lay on the ground until it is dug up for recycle. It will not decompose. cost of clean up is offset by the value of the lead and copper.

I was talking to a shotgun range owner in Arkansas who told me that they put a type of landscaping sheet down on the burm to make collecting the lead for recycling easier. He also said that money was going to be a significant part of his business plan.

Ive got almost 5 gallons of bullets that I have picked out of berms so far. Am going to start casting as soon as I gather the materials.

I have 3 full 5 gallon buckets of ignot molds. I tried casting and decided it was easier for me to pay someone else to make the bullets (like Black Bullets International or Bayou Bullets) and I concentrate on shooting.
