Brass is Pulling Decapper Pin Out

Anybody seen this before. I am reloading 357 sig Speer brass and I kept thinking I was breaking the decapping pin. After the third one in about 30 cartridges something has to be wrong. I pulled the bullet and the decapping pin was stuck in the flash hole. I managed to get the new primer out without setting it off and the pin was wedged in the hole. Guess the flash holes are undersized on some of the Speer brass. Ive got some Winchester and the pin goes right those with plenty of clearance.

Not sure how many you reload but it might be worth it to uniform the flash holes. The tool is about $15. That or your could chuck the decapping rod in a drill and file it a bit thinner. You might have to sand it if the pin is hardened.

The problem is not all the Speer brass has the too small of hole, and you dont know which ones until you deprime them and the pin pulls out. Then it is a PIA to get the pin out and reinstall. I do like the idea of sanding down the pin. Sometime the easiest solutions are the hardest to see. Thanks.

I've had that problem with mil-surp .223/5,56 brass. There's a short list on the wall of my shop of head stamps I toss into the scrap bucket. Would these be Lee dies? The one thing I hate about Lee dies is that cannot replace the decapping pin unless you replace the entire expander and all.

I've had the same problem with speer brass (...especially the old nickle....). As others have said, the problem is that the flashole is too small. I fixed the last batch with a cordless drill and a drill just a bit bigger than the decapping pin. Like normal, i cant remember what size it was. RE: The cutting down of decapping pins. As i remember, these pins are pretty hard. I would opt for the uniforming or redrilling the flash holes in the brass.

any chance the brass you are having an issue with has the lead free primers?

Yes they are lee dies, not sure about primers being lead free or not. 5 minutes with pin chicked up in drill and some emory cloth and problem fixed. Thanks Dolomite.
