I have a shot at getting a winchester 1300 with a rifled slug barrel. My question is will it mess it up to shoot shot through that barrel?

Sorry I could not find anything on this when I searched the forum.

Normal lead shot no, But it will not usually pattern as well as a choked smoothbore barrel. Steel waterfoul shot can hurt the rifling though.

I personally never use the rifiled barrels. For the distance I use a slug 100 yards or less I do just fine with a smoothbore barrel.

I bought a winchester 1300 with a rifled slug barrel for 200. I may change it over to a tactical setup later. I just wanted to make sure that 00 buck, home defense load, would not hurt the barrel.

I'd be interested in seeing the results if you ever try and pattern this combination on paper. I've always heard that rifling in a barrel makes shot pattern erratic, but I've never seen any first hand results.

Every one I have ever seen has not been pretty. Depending of how the rifeling engages the wad you may or may not even be on paper at 15 yards. 7 yards it's just all over the place.

You need to pattern it before using it for defense. I do know that the rifled bore will expand the shot quite a bit and could either help or hurt depending on what you are looking for.

I suspect at 10 yards you are going to have the majority of the buckshot pellets off a man sized target with a rifled bore.

I plan on using it at 7 yards or less. That is the length of the longest room in my house, the living room. I will pattern it first. If the Pattern is no good I will get a 18-20 inch barrel and set it up for a tactical shotgun.

Sorry Caster, I am going to keep the Rifled Bll as back up deer gun.

Well you got a good price on the gun. Even if you have to buy a new barrel your in nice shape on it.

I realy couldn't afford it but I couldn't afford not to. I don't think I will run across a Winchester for that price any time soon.
