I wasn't really sure where to put this question, so I put it here. If doesn't fit, please move it. I just want to know if there is a quick and easy way to run a serial number on a gun before you buy from a private sale. Just want to make sure that the gun is not stolen or whatever. Is there a quick way to do this? Maybe online or over the phone? Thanks.

Are you talking about running the serial number of an NFA item? or just a standard Title 1 firearm?

I cant think of a way for a private citizen to run the serial number.

A dealer or LEO can run the numbers for you if you are that unsure of the guns history.

*But if you are that unsure, I would say thats a good reason to walk away.

I am not talking about NFA items, I just wasn't sure where to put this. Its not that I am unsure about a particular sale or anything, I just would hate to buy a firearm that was stolen. So LEO or dealer is the only way to check? Thanks.

This is one reason why I will only carry or keep for HD guns which I purchased from an FFL, preferably new.

There are only 2 guns i have that i will carry that i didn't buy new. And i purchased those to from a guy that bought them new and i have known for almost 15 years.

As much as i hate the paperwork if you ever have to use the gun you will be glad you can prove were it came from.

I agree with what you guys are sayin about the paperwork and being able to prove you bought the gun, but.....Sometimes you run across these good deals, and need to act quickly. I know, alot times, these deals are too good to be true...Just thought if there were a way to check easily then I would feel better about a transaction.

I think its a good idea to have anything used checked, but then i'm a worry wort. I don't see why a criminal might be less informed on gun prices than half of the legal vendors or private sellers at the average gunshow, or on this board for that matter. They might be better dressed and have teeth.

I think if you go to the trouble to have a gun checked out, and you're a normal guy, the cops aren't going to arrest you. If you use that gun in a self defense situation without getting it checked and it turns up hot, then you might have to "stand tall before the man".

I have them fill out the form that TGO offers...but if they wont, and I REALLLLLLLY want the gun, I make sure to have SOMETHING...First and Last name, date of transaction, Serial number, and the verified phone number of the dude/dudette I bought it from, along with the time of day, and location of where the transfer occured.
