DE in 44 mag. Much, much easier to find ammo, and just as loud and fun. The last 50 AE I saw was like $35 a box.

If you want the revolver .... get a DE revolver in 30-30 or one of the other rifle calibers :) (I think it comes in 50/500 of some flavor too).

I vote the 500, but the 460 is also very tempting as they made in a 5" barrel version and you can shoot three calibers out of it.

Then again, why would I want to take on reloading three new calibers.

I really like the 4" 500.

I have seen more than 1 500 S&W that can't keep a scope on it. The scope moves forward after a few shots.

The answer? Epoxy the scope inside the rings. That was the answer given to a shooter when he called to find a solution. I can't remember if it was Leupold or S&W that gave him the advice.

The owner sold it rather than ruin $350 worth of optics.

For that reason DE would be my choice. Actually I wouldn't own either.

I'd go for the .50 action express but no the Desert Eagle. The cartridge is great, but that pistol is ungainly and cumbersome. How about, classy, sexy and retro rolled into one: Hamilton Bowen builds these from Ruger Redhawks. Hand cannons with class!

Patterned after the U. S. martial revolvers of World War I , this Redhawk sports a S&W M&P style fixed-sight top strap and a round, unribbed barrel with a dovetail windage-adjustable front sight. A lanyard ring is fitted in keeping with the service nature of the gun. The fluted 5-shot cylinder is chambered for the .50 Action Express cartridge, a rimless round retained, appropriately enough, in classic moon clips as were the .45 ACP cartridges used in the S&W and Colt revolvers. Hand finishing and Roy Fishpaw checkered French walnut grips add a touch of commercial refinement.

I let at least five DE .44's slip through my fingers for less than a grand. It won't happen again.

I probably won't see the opportunity again, either.

Most people get tired of them, or of feeding them. I got mine used for $800. No, I am not selling it :)

Okay. I'm in love with that .50 AE revolver. Between the two original choices I've heard that DEs are extremely ammo finicky.

mine has never been picky. Just needs to be cleaned pretty regular or it can start failing to feed. Ive shot a wide variety of 44s without any trouble at all, even some fairly light stuff worked, as did some reloads bought at a gunshow. I cant see why the 50 or 357 would be any different, but if it were going to be picky it seems the 357 would be the one, long and narrow seem to be more troublesome in autos. I would bet most complaints come from lack of cleaning --- these rounds have a lot of powder, and the more powder, the more residue, 100+ is a pretty dirty gun.

For the record, anyone who's as in love with that revolver as I am should know [with a broken heart]....I have written Mr. Bowen and got a reply from him last year on said revolver. You're looking at north of $3500 plus the donor Redhawk for that. When I hit the powerball, I plan on having a matched, consecutive serial numbered pair. Until then, I have this very nice photo to look at.

Do you want a ridiculous caliber or a ridiculous gun? A .500 S&W is all kinds of crazy as a caliber but when you really get down to it's just a really, REALLY big revolver. Once you get used to the size of it an X-Frame doesn't really stand out until you pull the trigger.

A .50 DE OTOH is pretty crazy just sitting there. It's got an innate funkiness to it that goes beyond just a .44 revolver that's been eating babies and drinking tiger's blood, which for all it's size and power is basically all the .500 has going for it.

I will say that, as crazy as it sounds, a .460/.500 is probably a lot more "practical". It's pretty easy to load them up or down and most every one I've heard of has been quite accurate.

The Desert Eagle is actually a fun gun to shoot and was quite accurate in 50.AE, I also had a 4" S&W 500 which sucked to shoot, its like it made every bone in your arm vibrate which I did not like and quickly developed a flinch with it. 50 AE has less energy and typically lower grain than the 500 though, that being said my Desert Eagle through out a huge fireball that the 500 did not so it made shooting on indoor ranges alot of fun.

My Desert Eagle ate any and all ammo I could get for it and was far from being finicky.

DE all the way. If you know where to get the ammo its not that bad. midway usually has defense ammo for about the same price as .45. I save my brass and reload for about 45 cents a shot. As far as FTF problems, used ones are more prone to FTF due to the main springs (2) wearing out. You can get a tune up kit for about 50 bucks and they will run like a Swiss watch. THE RECOIL IS NOT THAT BAD. Its a heavy piece and that absorbs a lot of the recoil. Love mine. Carry it occasionally when I feel like Dirty Harry on steroids

The DE got old quick for me. Too expensive to shoot. I have to say that the recoil was very much less than I had expected, though. I contribute this to it weighing 4.5 lbs. empty. If you're looking for a rediculous gun, look at the H&K Mark 23. That's a rediculous pistol.
