I just found this: http://www.foamerica...show=300&page=1

Hard to tell from the pics but I think the Pick and Pluck stuff is it, right?

You can google "pick and pluck foam" to find other sources as well.

I would be afraid to google image "pick and pluck" :ugh: Dear God, what could possible come up from that search!

Oddly enough, only foam and Pelican cases. Even for images.

Haha, well someone had to test the waters. I'm going to search local places next. The only problem is that I need more of a sheet, not one designed for a Pelican case specifically. But if worse comes to worse I could use two of the rifle case inserts for what I want to do.

That Pelican foam is almost as expensive as the cases. I wonder if Home Depot sells foam sheets, that would work. I just need a sheet to put on a shelf to keep my rifle and such from getting scratched up and such.

If you want the pick'n'pluck type, the site above is the easiest to find it. I searched for quite a while with little luck. And yes, m14man is right, JoAnn's fabrics is about the highest for sheets of foam. And not really the best quality either. I thought it had a tacky feel to it that I didn't want nest to my guns.

Michaels and Hobby Lobby? Don't waste your time. Same product and usually small sections at high prices. I been there and was disgusted. Unless you just luck up on something in an out of the way location, your best source for foam is an online dealer.

I've never used pelican cases or the pelican brand pick'n'pluck. Dunno if the pelican pick'n'pluck is better than some of the stuff. Have seen some non-pelican pick'n'pluck where the little squares come out too easy and it can get ratty-looking too easy after some wear.

A few years ago got a large heavy-duty SKB waterproof pistol case from Sportsmans Warehouse for eyepiece storage rather than pistols. It has velcro padded dividers that I like a lot. The dividers are "infinitely re-adjustable" and seem very rugged and they stay-put. Beats heck out of cutting foam.

The current skb website doesn't show any of their pistol cases with the padded velcro dividers (though perhaps they still sell them). But they show a line of generic watertight cases with the dividers as one option. The page labels them fishing cases but the ad copy says they can be used for pistols, optics, etc.

Dunno if SKB is the only company that sells cases with the adjustable soft velcro dividers. It might be difficult to retrofit a case to use them. Just wanted to mention it because it is one of the best ideas for some purposes that I've seen. It was easy to adjust the dividers to perfectly hold all my eyepieces each in a perfect sized compartment, but if I was to change out to different-sized equipment, or use the case for an entirely different purpose, it would only take a minute to re-configure, with no foam cutting.

If you just need sheets of foam would USGI Surplus sleeping pads work? You can get them on ebay for 6 bucks or so. 75 inches long, 24 inches wide and 3/8 inch thick. Yoga mats from a sporting goods store might also work.

Does anyone know where I can get a sheet of a foam insert with removable cubes like in a Pelican case? I've looked but haven't found any.

Don't know if its still there, but there was place on Central on the left, a block or so past the Freezo. They have all kinds of foam, and will cut to your specs.

I like the sleeping pad idea, because I could cut them in the online of my rifle and other things. I'll check them out caliperman, I was hoping it would be a local place.

Are the gi surplus sleeping pads by any chance .75" thick blue closed cell foam?

Haven't looked lately, but wallyworld usually sells .75" blue closed cell foam sleeping pads in sporting goods, not real expensive. I usually keep some of that around as a generic material because it is good for lots of assorted things.

Have used it to make custom cutouts in cases because it is tough and easier to cut with a razor knife than many foams. Have cut it in multiple layers and glued the layers into cases.

Ace hardware sells a sealer/caulk/adhesive that works great on lots of stuff including the blue foam. That adhesive is also about the only thing I've found that will do a decent job gluing leather shoes back together. Heck, it works great for most stuff except of course there are many tasks where a better type of glue is available. It is called Ace High Tech Sealant. Here is the web-link to cases of 12 on the ace site but my local Ace always has it in stock quantities of one--

The adhesive is clear but not a silicone sealer. It has a toluene smell like old fashioned contact cement and you ought to use it in good ventilations. It is probably known by the state of california to cause all sorts of cancer, mental illness, and possibly even make an extra arm grow out of your forehead. If gluing leather or foam, give it about 24 hours to set up good.

It also works great as conventional caulk. Excellent for installing replacement house windows and such. But it will "shrink" more than some silicone or polyurethane caulks, so if you lay it on really thick in a wide seam it might require two coats to fill properly.

Another nice thing, if your fingers get all gummed up with this kind of sealant, before it is completely dry on your fingers, you can spray isopropyl alcohol on your hands and the isopropyl instantly removes the sticky nature of the stuff and it will just roll up off your fingers easy as pie. Lots easier than trying to get polyurethane or silicone sealer or half-dried liquid nails cleaned off yer hands.

Thanks for the information. The reason I am looking for the stuff is to use as a soft base for a rifle/mag/optics shelf. It won't look as cool in opinion as the pick and pluck, but then again it really doesn't matter that much.
