Recommended Posts

Well I did the father thing todday. I bought my son his first rifle. Yep got him a brand new Ruger 10/22 for his 13th birthday. I think I am more stoked than he will be. Now to get a scope and sling for it. So as far as a scope go would you get a traditional or go some were like a red dot sight. He will be doing the apple seed program with this gun at some point this year which meas lots of range time. Give my you alls thought on this.

Way to go Dad. My grandson uses a traditional scope on his 10/22. Get a lot of ammo you will need it.

green with envy, only girls in this house.

Hasn't stopped me.

My daughter has been given my first rifle, an Iver Johnson Lil' Champ my father bought me over thirty years ago. She complains that it is not pink, so I am building her a dedicated .22LR AR, in pink.

Traditional gets my vote. Both my kids started on a pellet gun when they were very young with a standard scope. My oldest (13 as well) now enjoys mil dot shooting and trying to shoot further every few months.

I wouldn't let that stop you...I'm buying a 22 rifle for my niece for Christmas this year. :)

And oh yes, she wants a pink stock!

I vote for the standard scope as well. I think there is a more special feeling in being able to see your target, and shots, in an upclose feeling that a red dot wouldn't deliver.

I would get a traditional scope. That way they can zoom in and play with it. I got a 3-9x Barska Scope with rings for around $35 for my 10/22 recently (yes I still shoot it) and I'm enjoying it.

This might be kind of lane if your hoping to surprise him, but how about taking him out to look at a few styles, maybe give your own opinions and advise on what works best for what and let him pick. There are a number of shooting sports or activitys where specific equipment could either be a sound investment or money better spent. Also nothing wrong with iron sights till he makes up his mind.

Good on you for taking some initiative and getting your kid out there having fun learning safely.
