Fish eggs

Ok, I went fishing today and had some nice Crappie and White Bass. Many of them were full of eggs. I've heard Old Timers (older than me of course) talk about cooking and eating fish eggs. I am willing to try them, but the internet offers liitle on this subject. Any sujestions? Jokes are OK too.....

Long ago a buddy who was perpetually persuing get rich quick schemes novel business opportunities, was telling me about some biz he wanted to invest in, of harvesting usa fish eggs, shipping them to europe for canning, and then re-importing the canned fish eggs as fine expensive caviar. That is all I remember about the deal.

Be careful not to eat too much fried roe, especially if you have to venture out in public after eating. I had a buddy that ate them for breakfast and wore white pants to school (it was the 80's, think Don Johnson). Well he paid dearly for the morning choices.

OK.....I dredged these bad boys in flour and dropped them in hot oil. They "Snapped, Crackled and Popped" like Rice crispies on Viagra â„¢. I was pretty impressed with the taste. Will never throw another fish egg away again!

I still, however, refuse to "crack open" a skwerl head with a spoon and eat it's little brain....some things I totally just draw the line on.

This might be a topic for a new thread....Weirdest wild game or fish item you've ever ate....anyone? Anyone? Beaular?

Ate fish eggs all my life from bass, bream, crappie, drum, catfish, whatever; also some various salt water species. Generally only when I was frying them up fresh, never messed with freezing them along with fillets though. I always found them just so so.

Sometimes wondered how they'd be fixed like caviar.

edit: saw your "weirdest eating" addendum. This comes up once in a while.

For me, I guess it was a chihuahua, snapping turtles, and several groundhogs.

I've never eaten eggs from a fish I caught. I can say I don't care much for caviar. Also, I really like many types of sushi/sashimi but I don't like the stuff with roe on it.

As far as weirdest, well, some folks would consider the aforementioned sushi/sashimi to be weird - especially the unagi (freshwater eel - one of my favorites). I also like beef tongue, especially in tacos or prepared in a Colombian style 'creole' sauce although I have only gotten to eat the latter twice and that restaurant - which was in Cleveland, TN - is no longer in business. I'm planning to try my hand at making Columbian style beef tongue in creole sauce, soon. I've eaten goat a couple of times in the Caribbean. I also really like escargot when they are prepared right.

When I worked at a grocery store, I would sometimes go into the meat cutting room and snack on a piece or two of fresh raw beef - usually beef stew - as the butchers were cutting it off of the larger piece. That was in the '80s, before the meat 'scares', and it tasted really good. I have heard that most modern humans have trouble digesting very much raw meat such as beef, etc. - I guess I have a Neanderthal stomach because I would eat quite a bit of it, sometimes, and it never bothered me. In fact, it usually made me feel pretty good. I was working in the meat cutting room one day when one of the butchers dared me to drink a cup of the blood from the beef (I don't think he knew I actually liked the raw meat.) I did it, so I guess that is a bit weird (but it wasn't bad.)

As far as 'game' goes, I guess the racoon I smoked, pulled and made sandwiches out of with a home-made barbecue sauce was a little unusual. The little b*stard shouldn't have gotten into my chicken coop.

I've had quite a bit of almost everything. The wierdest but most tasty of all was "monkey paws". Not bad, not bad at all....The worst thing I've ever tried to consume is Chit'lins.....folks.....heck.....I'm gagg'in already!!!

I know it's a slim chance, but if you ever catch or shoot a gar, of any species, DO NOT EAT IT'S EGGS!!!!

They are unbelievably toxic & can (and probably will) kill you.

As far as I'm aware, they're the only species or genus of fish found in the US that have toxic eggs.

Again; DO NOT EAT GAR EGGS!!!

On the other hand, their meat is excellent. One of the bestest eating fish around!

Wow, never knew, quick search reveals that's a well known factoid, and I'm surprised I didn't know it.

Have indeed caught a few gar in my life, but never of course kept them to eat. But it's good to know, 'cause in a SHTF situation, I'd be inclined to eat whatEVER I happened to be able to catch, eggs and all.

I never knew that about gar eggs. Although I have never eaten gar, I had a nieghbor that loved them, and took everyone I could bring them. I've even cleaned the gar for them having to use "tin snips"...Eel is good. Anyone ever fixed up a "bowfin"?

No but I've eaten lots of carp.

quick recipe (no not the board joke):

Best to use 3 pounders or less if possible (because of the fine network of bones).

Fillet and skin, cut out belly. Run the fillets through meat grinder a time or two, this minces up the fine network of bones left in the fillets.

Then make "carp cakes" same as you would with salmon patties, mix with chopped onion, bell pepper, whatever you like, use an egg in there to help hold together. Form the patties, dust with corn meal or flour and fry in hot oil.

Delicious. The "muddy taste" is mostly fish legend, certainly if it exists it's in the fatter belly meat only...I've eaten them out of cold non muddy moving water from Melton Hill and from mud bottomed sluggish water from Watts Bar, and they taste the same.

Discovered this during a 4 month camping stint on Melton Hill Lake in my youth, when I didn't have a boat and couldn't catch much from the bank except endless carp.

Love fish eggs. Tastiest I've found is carp. Baked, boiled or fried, they're tough to beat.

Weird stuff eaten? Skunk, beaver, lizards, snakes and earthworms come to mind immediately. Pickled robin's eggs was probably amongst the tastiest. Snake jerky was a close second. Fried grasshoppers aren't bad once you get over the initial ..."ugh!" factor.

I have had lots of mullet roe pan fried. I like it ok, but not crazy over it.

I tried to eat a porcupine that my buddy shot in Alaska. It tasted like pine-sol.

I have had chit'lins a few times and I like them. SO LONG AS THEY ARE CLEAN and FRIED. I won't eat them stewed. That is just nasty...

chit'lins are alright long as you clean the stuff out of them

I think its all nasty, fish eggs etc....yuck.

That's probably what everyone thought until one caveman guy was bold enough to say, "Hey ya'll, see them hangy-down things on that big critter with the horns? I'm gonna' squeeze 'em and drink what comes out!" Or, "Hey, see that thing that just dropped outta' that bird's rear? I'm gonna' crack it open and eat whatever's inside!"

Know what I think is nasty? Tofu. :yuck:
