Just put a couple of coats of BLO on the stock.

You're gonna have to expand on the BLO because I am not knowledgeable about refinishing wood.

Boiled Linseed Oil. It is the basis for most surplus stock maintenance. Just Google "boiled linseed oil rifle stock" there is tons of info out there, too much actually. Ther is also some great stock care and finishing tips on the surplus rifle forum and CMP forum.

There is also tung oil, pure, not the stuff Formby's makes. The only place you can get that is Woodcraft or other internet sources. Some use what's called 1/3 mix with is a combination of BLO, turpentine and beeswax.

I would cut some with turpentine, maybe a 50/50 mix, and apply a coat or two. You can apply with some 0000 steel wool to help even things out a little. From there you can build up to full strength BLO until the wood will not soak any more up.

I installed the rear sight today. It came with the anti-aircraft setup, but no wings. I found the wings at http://www.gunpartsc...0620&catid=1206 , however I do not think they come with the screws. I have looked at the diagram and I have either overlooked them, or they simply do not sell them.

The anti-aircraft wings are held on by screws that come in from the bottom. I also checked Numrich, and it doesn't look like they have them.

I have an extra screw for holding the rear sight spring in place, and it would not fit into the holes for the wings either

Is your stock set up to take the long cleaning rod or the short one? If you will be using the short 5 inch rod then chances are that the gun is a transion piece made toward the end of the war, but before the "last ditch" guns. If that is the case the wings on the rear site, the mono pod and the cleaning kit did not come on these guns due to the lack of steel. The cleaning rod hardware that holds the rod in place is also different between the to sizes. Mine was set up for the short rod, and the rod screws into a round steel piece found under the front of the stock a couple of inches in from the end of the nose cap . I believe the long rods are held in place with some type of spring with a square button fitted under the front of the stock just before the nose cap. The front of the stock will only be drilled a couple of inches for the short rod.

My stock has the button-release-type mechanism, so I will assume the full length rod, anti air rifle configuration. Thanks for that input.

**UPDATE**

I figured that I would post this here, I recently bought a firing pin and ammo for the Arisaka. Fired it for the first time today. I was cautious, knowing what I had found in the chamber when I got it, and shot it from behind a tree. Ammo cost me $37 shipped for 20 rounds from sportsman's guide. It's Graff and Sons...wasn't the highest price I have seen for that ammo either.

 

I must say that it was worth the time I put into it. I may want to look into having someone hot blue the gun though, as my cold bluing job is wearing thin on the high wear areas.

Glad you got to enjoy after all the work.  I've only shot my Type 99 a couple of times, but it has quite a wallop.

In my experience, milsurp ammo does tend to thump pretty good while aftermarket stuff seems a good bit lighter.  Glad you got it up and running.  How about some pics of the finished article?

This is my friend shooting the Arisaka. The whole story behind me saying "balanced" refers to a comment he made about a gun of his one time. We give him hell about it all the time.
