I'm getting a temp permit

Since I didn't get my renewal in on time to process and issue the renewal, Department of Safety is sending me a temp permit.

I sent the renewal in about four weeks ago and called today to check the status. All they can tell me is that it is processing. She did say they are doing background checks on all renewals now, hence creating a backlog.

I sent mine in about a month ago too. Fortunately, I still have a month before mine expires. If it gets closer (within 2 weeks) I will call them.

I didn't know you could get these things.

Nor did I. I was always under the impression you carried the "reciept" around. :-P

They cashed my check on 3/3 and I have yet to get my renewal. And the permit expired the beginning of this month.

So of course I am not carrying a loaded weapon in public. Especially when I leave the shop at night in E.Nashville, sometimes carrying over a thousand dollars in cash. That would be illegal, right??

All you need to legally carry is your old permit and the receipt for your renewal. No need to go unarmed.

It is taking between 45 - 60 days to get renewals.

One reason I don't mail my renewal in.

You can legally carry with your old permit and the receipt they give you at the DL station until your new permit arrives.

But if you mail it in there appears to be no such receipt for you to have and use.

A canceled check is a valid receipt in a court of law. I would carry a copy of that with me if I don't get it back in time.

I have wondered about that...and agree with you. Just wonder if Joe Law Officer would?

I would also carry the documentation from the DOS website stating that a receipt with a permit is valid until you get a letter stating you were denied. Have him arrest me. My Lawyer would meet me at the jail and I would get everything back.

Anyone have a reference for this in TCA or the TDOS website?

Not anything about Temp Permits, but here is the TDOS page and TCA reference that the renewal receipt is valid.

http://tennessee.gov/safety/handgun/renewals.htm

Permit Holders whose permit has not expired and are renewing their permit, may legally carry their handgun with the receipt provided from their application. Permit Holders whose permit have expired and are renewing their permit, cannot lawfully carry a handgun until they receive their new permit.

(q) (1) Prior to the expiration of a permit, a permit holder may apply to the department for the renewal of the permit by submitting, under oath, a renewal application with a renewal fee of fifty dollars ($50.00). The renewal application shall be on a standard form developed by the department of safety and shall require the applicant to disclose, under oath, the information concerning the applicant as set forth in subsection ©, and shall require the applicant to certify that the applicant still satisfies all the eligibility requirements of this section for the issuance of a permit. In the event the permit expires prior to the department's approval or issuance of notice of denial regarding the renewal application, the permit holder shall be entitled to continue to use the expired permit; provided, however, that the permit holder shall also be required to prove by displaying a receipt for the renewal application fee that the renewal application was delivered to the department prior to the expiration date of the permit.

OK, I misread the posts. I thought they meant that if you renewed and your permit had run out before you renewed you could still carry with your old permit and renewal receipt.

So, there are no temporary permits, just permission to carry with the old one until the new background check is done? Mtsusean says they are sending him one. Maybe they will do that if you renew by mail.

Is it possible though that they just used the words "temp permit" generically? Perhaps they meant "we're sending you a receipt so you can keep carrying." Makes me wonder.

She specifically used the terminology "temporary permit" so I took that at face value.

I'll post an update when I get it to maybe clarify things (since I haven't seen it myself)

I called today.

The very nice woman told me they now have to do background checks on all renewals. It will take THREE MONTHS. She is sending a "temporary permit" to me in the meantime. That is the exact language she used.

veery interesting... I must have done my renewal before they did that, because mine was back in just a few weeks earlier this year. Every actual bg check I've ever been subjected to took alot longer than that... I'm surprised that my initial permit only took 6 weeks, back when I first got it.

I too called today. She said to wait until a week or two before I expired and then call back to get "the letter" to carry for 90 days along with the permit.

Lessoned learned. Should I still be in TN when the next one expires, I will go 90 days prior to the DMV and pay for the renewal.

I went to the DMV to renew my permit on 2-14-08, and have not recieved mine. I called and the lady I talked to said that they were still doing the background check. I think this wait had to do with the Phil Williams story on channel 5.

i had a customer in yesterday, he went down to the DLTC and turned his in... back on Jan 15th 2008... still hasnt gotten his renewal yet... this backlog is getting old.

Received the temp permit today. It came in the form of a 8.5 x 11 letter. Shown below if the tags work

to be honest, that letter is BS... you shouldnt have to wait this long for a freaking renewal. Safety better get thier head out of their... well you know!

Just send the renewal 90 days before the permit expires and you won't have to worry with this stuff.

That's a lot of what I got from this topic.
