GM's Hyrdamatic plant produced M-16s in the late 60s, early 70s. I assume some made it to the general market in semi-auto form.

Far out, had no idea, thanks.

Like a IBM, Underwood Typewriter, or Rock-Ola M1 carbine, pretty incongruous thinking about it looking back.

Why are they so expensive? The department I worked for had tons of these old ones in full auto. They were for training recruits only. We treated them like crap and didn't even clean them, lol.

Because civilians aren't allowed to own full autos manufactured after 1986. Dwindling supply, rising demand.

There are plenty of them out there, but they never made it to civilian hands, they went to LEAs and stayed there.

Out of curiosity, could the Sheriff's department sell pre-86 autos to civilians? Is there a regulation that I'm missing or is that possible? I know it would be class III in any case, and I really don't even know why I'm asking. I would think that departments could make some money by auctioning off the pre-86's and replacing them with new full autos which I'm assuming they can do correct? Like a department purchase?
