So I am on a diet

Well my wife is on a diet as well so that means I am too. I really needed to anyways so I don't mind and it is easier having someone else in the house doing the same thing. We help eachother make it over the daily hunger episodes.

Before my helicopter accident I was a very active ~190 pounds. Within 1 year of my accident I lost a bunch of weight, dropping to 147 pounds. I lost most of it because my activity level went from very active to very sedentary. I had lost a lot of muscle mass and I can tell.

Well at 147 my wife said I needed to gain weight because I looked so bad and that is when my feast began. I ate a lot and most of it was very bad and within I year I had made it to $175. Then about a year after that I was 195. And at that point I knew I needed to loose the weight I had gained or at least most of it.

So 22 days ago we both embarked on our diets. During my time I fell victim to a jalepeno popper or two and chicken wings before settling into what I must do.

As of today, day 22, I am down 12 pounds. I plan on getting down into the 150-155 pound range. Even if I do look sick I would prefer to look sick than be sick.

Very proud of you.. even tho you cheated 2 times with those yummy Jalapeno poppers.

Just dont go so far down like you did when you where in Bosnia.. way to much..

So, are you using someone's program or just eating sensibly and will power?

Counting calories and fat? Cutting the ice creme before bed? High protein low carb? Veggie style? Fruity style?

Good luck in meeting your goal.

Oh yea, and where are you getting these poppers? Arby's no longer have theirs on the menu :(

Anyway, I REALLY need to get on track with my dieting. I keep falling off the wagon. Congrats on the progress Gordon.

Just my $0.02. I have never been a fan of diets so to speak. When most people go on diets and lose weight, they typically put it back on once they go off the diet. I have always thought the best way to lose or gain weight is through lifestyle changes instead of temporary diets. I am a big proponent of clean eating and daily exercise. While lifestyle changes always take longer, you end up feeling better and looking better, plus you have added benefit of improved health.

Congrats on you too doing well. We've recently altered our lifestyles to remove processed and GMO foods. We all feel better.

Ha. I was going to say lifestyle change too. Diets are for quiting.

Well its more of a lifestyle change than anything else.

We do not eat processed food anymore.. everything is fresh.

I eat 500 cals a day and he eats a few more.

No refined sugars ( only stevia or truvia, low carb, no oils etc.. and no fast food, sodas or anything junk .

I am down 24.5 since we started..

Those Jalapeno Poppers are at Wal-mart on the hot lunch line ( Superwalmart only I guess) but they do sell `em at Sam`s..Dont give into those.. they are so addicting

Sounds a lot like Paleo or Primal Blueprint. I've been doing mostly paleo since late December and I'm down around 25lb so far. Congrats on your success!

Not using any program per se, just the same that my wife is doing. The biggest thing I changed is rather than eating until I am feeling full I make a portion that happens to be smaller and eat it. Then I generally feel full after a while.

I have always been aware of what is good and bad for you and would always choose the good over the bad. Problem I had was portion size. Before the change I would continue to eat until I felt sick from being so full. But even then I would still crave more food.

I still eat things I like just but nothing out of a can or a package.

The thing I eat most is fresh chili. I use ~3.5 ounces of steak that is cut into cubes, a whole fresh tomato and a 1/2 of fresh onion. Cook it down and add chili powder. This makes for a filling meal that tastes better than any chili I have ever eaten out of a can. And if I want a little extra I will add more water then pour it over some toast but those are special treat days. Another big advantage is that meal is under $3.

Because of the helicopter crash I am very limited on what I can do physically. Running, which I have always loved to do, is out of the question as is any type of weight lifting. I can walk but no more than 20 minutes at a time and even then it really bothers me a lot. Basically any repeatative motion that involved my back moving is out of the question.

Stick with it my friend. You stike me as a dedicated individual. So I have no doubt you will succeed. You can be my inspiration. I need to drop more than a few pounds myself and as you know it is very hard to take it off.

But with what you've come thru already, this will be a milk run for you.

Are you able to tolerate riding a bike? If so, it's a great way to burn calories and improve your cardio.

I should be following your lead. When I graduated 17 years ago I was 110 lbs. When I married 10 years ago I was 145 pounds. Now I'm sitting about 220 pounds @ 5'11" and I'm miserable. I have to go to a chiropractor regularly to stay mobile.

Wonder how swimming would go for you? Summer's coming. Low impact but VERY good workout.

When Trekbike mentioned cycling I was thinking about a recumbent bike for someone with a back condition instead of the traditional upright bike. The bumps would still be intolerable, but it is like riding a bike while leaning back in a chair. I have seen some that look really cool and they look they would be a blast to ride.

Don't know if they have it for the iphone or not, but some aps on my droid that are helpling me keep track are "myfitnesspal" and "impetus."

MyFitnessPal helps keep track of calorie intake (as well as fat/protein/carbs/sodium/etc. if you want to watch that) and can be accessed by phone as well as computer.

Impetus is an interval timer that allows you to set up basic programs (i.e. it will beep every 30 seconds) to help you keep track of things like stetching without having to count the seconds in your head. It also allows you to set up advanced programs (not completely intuitive but I figured it out) that help with circuit training (i.e. It gives me a countdown to get ready...will make a certian noise every 30 seconds...give me a 10 second rest...then start again with a different noise to let me know it is time to work again...will continue to do this for 8 cycles...give me a 1 minute rest...then start the 8 cycle over again...and after 4 of the 8 cycles it plays another sound (or song if you prefer) to let me know I am done).

I chose impetus over other interval trainers I found because it did allow you to customize your own workouts (even advanced) and will allow you to pick from your ringtones to decide what you want to hear for the indicator to workout, rest, start, finish, etc. Also, there might be an advanced version, but I have the free version and it works fine for me so far.

I am hitting the gym 5 days a week starting next week, just cardio to lose the dead weight along with high protein diet again. We don't eat fast food or drink sodas either. I weigh 280 and I'm 6' ft. My goal is to be 190 by December to sign for Navy Reserves. Nothin I can't do and same for you buddy! Keep it up! Even with your mobility issues you can lose the weight. I am just tired of being a fat A** and hard of finding clothes that fit me comfortably. Hell I bought a 5.11 tac vest 2x+ and it's adjusted to its max and that's when it hit me...if the zombies come....fatties get it first lmao :)
