LEO Came By My House Last Night

I'm fairly new (in the last couple months or so) to guns in general. But when we moved to Memphis (previously from Seattle and Cincinnati) my wife thought it might be a good idea to get a gun. Of course I agreed as I've been trying to convince her for years but to no avail. We've had our new Ruger SP-101 for about three weeks now and have put 400 or so rounds through it. But we haven't yet taken the carry course. So the gun is just in the home (in a quick access safe, of course) for now. My wife still isn't sure about the whole thing and still has expressed some reservation in the weeks that we've owned it.

Anyway, I live in Highpoint Terrace in Memphis which is a pretty good neighborhood but is near some pretty bad neighborhoods. So last night a Memphis PO comes by with a flier with information about some bad stalker dude that apparently is trying to get to this girl that lives on the street behind ours. This jerkweed assaulted/battered her the other night and has been stalking her and he's been spotted parked on my street from time to time and is considered armed/dangerous. So the LEO is talking to a lot of people on the street and giving us good information. Very nice guy. I also asked him if they could do something about the constant speeding on my street (lots of small kids).

Anyway, so he moves on down the street to talk to some of our neighbors and my wife and I are looking at the flier with this scumbag's mugshot and vital statistics, and my wife kind of sighs and delivers the payoff, "Wow, I sure am glad we bought that gun!"

I just got this big grin... Anyway, now she's thinking of letting me buy another gun just for her... Nice!

Really nice!

I have a brother who's wife was really anti gun. didn't want one in the house, saw no use for them period! I pulled a fait accompli and gave one to my brother as a birthday gift. both of us grew up with firearms and are competent safe and fairly well trained with them.

Oh she was mad...but that changed the day a guy tried to barge into their house through an unlocked and partially opened door.

often times it takes a real life threat for folks to perceive the need for a firearm.

Once they see the need for it, they learn to see other threats and wonder how they lived without that insurance policy!

I know what kind of gun I would have, LOL

when were you in Cincinnati? East side or West?

Get that beauty out of the safe and shine the heck out of it for a while. The more your wife is around guns, the easier it will be on the both of you. Especially if she is shooting with you as well.....My wife was the same way. Wouldn't even touch a gun, but once the disposabe income stabilizes, we'll be getting her, her own permit.

Someone needs to suggest this to the chamber of commerce for a new Memphis theme. That would be an interesting marketing campaign:D

Now that she wants one, that gives you an excuse to buy three. One for her,and a back up for both of you.And if your slick with you words, then maybe a back up for your backup

Well, Welcome to the 'hood. We live a just 2-3 miles from y'all. I hope all goes well.

Medtronic?? Smith & Nephew? IP? ...Or...?

Self Defense has become a hobby that my wife and I are both are involved with now. We are both former clueless liberal nice people. Now people might call us 'gun nuts' if they knew how many guns and how much ammo we had in our modest home.

We did the HCP class at Rangemaster; either there or Range USA are good choices. I think RangeUSA is a little easier to stomach for newbies, but my wife actually appreciated the hard-hitting eloquent arrogance of Tom Givens at Rangemaster-- anywhere your wife will go is the right place. My wife and I both grew up on the streets, so Rangemaster/Givens was ok with us, but more urbane folks might prefer RangeUSA.

I had a really good experience with Memphis LEO's with a stalker- he was an ex-boyfriend of one of my patients-- actually torched/burned her car up. They found him, had a 'talk' with him, and she was no longer bothered. A lot of (most, perhaps) Memphis LEOs are hardworking folks trying to do the right thing, in my experience...

Welcome to one of the most violent cities in the USA. Gorgeous in the Spring and Fall. Mogadishu on the Mississippi. Good barbecue, good place to have a gun. Been here 20 years and never had one problem at all with any sort of crime.

Do you ride bicycles at all? If so, pm me- I am Dr Bike in Memphis.

take your wife with you when you shoot your gun. let her shoot it and see how safe they are. the first time i brought a gun in the house my wife freaked out. i let her go with me to the range a few times to shoot. now she loves to go to the range and shoot. and now shes more comfortable around guns

Trying to guess who I work for? Think of a company that exports one of the most expensive and complex vehicles a business can buy. This company does final assembly in Seattle. That's who I used to work for. Now, think of a local company that utilizes hundreds of these vehicles on a daily basis all over the world. That's who I work for now. Need another hint? Look at the first eight letters of my handle.

We are both former clueless liberal nice people.

Funny, in Seattle I was by far the most conservative person in my office. In Memphis I'm by far the most liberal person in my office. But I'm the same person.

Only leisurely (for cross-training). I'm into running and sometimes my knee gives me trouble. I try to ride during those times.

Welcome to Memphis. Welcome to the boards. Enjoy your new found hobby and way to protect yourself.

Zen, as a prof, it doesn't surprise me in the least that you used to be a "liberal".

Highpoint Terrace is decent. We used to live over at Southern and Graham. Now we live in East Memphis.

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations to you and your wife deciding to take personal responsibility for your safety and protection. May I suggest a third gun. Get a nice .22, not for protection, but for target practice. The mild recoil of the .22 is excellent for women (and men too, for that matter) to develop good technique and overcome the dreaded "flinch." The ammo is inexpensive also, helping to offset the gas it takes to get to the range.

Definitely agree. It's really easy to develop a flinch, and really difficult to cure one once it's set in. I still have problems from time to time...

As for the employer, I'll take FedEx for a thousand, Alex! :D

Parts of Knoxville are not for the faint of heart either.

I worked mental health for a few years and if the sheep out there really knew the the amount of nut cases and just plain old evil vermin on the streets and running loose EVERYONE with a lick of sense would be armed.
