The entire thing would have been preventable if the HCP man had been wearing his badge alerting the badguy to who he was dealing with.

Yes!

kwickrnu, you SO qualify!

the comment about the desert eagle sealed the deal.

as for the remark about how he couldn't hit the guy..he didn't have to. he stopped the threat! to do so without having to kill...thats a good thing!

"The acme of excellence is not to conquer every time, the acme of excellence is to foil the enemy's intentions, balk the enemy's schemes so that, at the end of the day, it may be won without the shedding of blood."

I'd say the fella lived and wasn't injured, and kept his belongings. I call it a win!

I say good for the old guy for stopping the threat without actually shooting the BG.

I also think a gas pump is a bad obsatcle to hide behind, but I guess it was all he had at the time, luckliy as someone else said, he did not blow himself up!

I also agree that he needs to get some more practice shooting his carry weapon.

And you could? He needs practice, yes. What he doesn't need is an armchair-commando who wasn't there second guessing what happened.

I really don't have a problem with the first part. Lots of people on this board do from what has been said over the last few days. How competent is this old man if he couldn't hit someone that close? Some have suggested an incompetent person shouldn't even have a permit to carry.

I have a big problem with someone who couldn't hit the bad guy from 3 feet away trying to hit him from 20-30 feet away while the bad guy was running in the other direction. You do not shoot people in the back unless they are going to use deadly force on someone else or maybe running to pick up a gun or something. There is no excuse.

What I like is that the Commercial Appeal, the Memphis paper, has the article on the front page of their internet version. The comments are overwhelmingly in favor of self defense.

In Memphis, maybe not in Kalifornia, but in Memphis, I think there is a change- the tide is turning. Even Black folks are talking more about self defense than about why the cops are failing protect them. Responsibility versus Entitlement. This is good.

Channel 7 in Jackson ran the story and actually called the HCP holder the

"victim"! Also their piece answered another question...When I watched him get the shotgun out of one car to go car jack the man's truck I wondered why, he has a car. Turns out he had carjacked the first car earlier....guess the BG found out it isn't always that easy.

I have said in some other threads that someone may leave themselves open for legal trouble when the chase people down. But he didn't chase the BG...and the BG wasn't running to get a gun...he HAD a gun. He could have very easily turned and fired.

Good for the old man, but stray bullets around a gas station are quite scary.

Can you image the headlines. HCP holder blows up gas station.

I really don't think it's as much of a danger as y'all are saying. Unless he's firing steel rounds there won't be any sparks and a bullet cannot be hotter than a burning cigarette and mythbusters already did that show and proved it to be false.

I'm not saying it's the best place to go shooting, just it's nowhere near as dangerous as it's made out to be.

I thank the gentlemen for is courage and self reliance. All here can do their version of an after action report, But if you were not in his shoes, you have no idea as to what was going on between his ears. Old men can still be bad asses if they must be.

+1. He fired until the the threat was eliminated and then he was able to go home.

Good for him but - "Todd takes cover behind the pumps as he fires at a dodging suspect..."

Gas pumps and shooting usually don't mix. He's lucky he didn't blow himself up.

Still proud of him, an older ram among the sheep.

+1

Lol I hope im never in that situation I would have shot til I was empty whether he was runnin away or not...he might have died of 5 self inflicted gun shot wounds to the back....As far as the guy missing from 3 feet away...its not like the BG was standing still and yeah it seems like close range, but unless your in the situation under pressure theres no way to know....practice practice practice.
