7.62x54r split case throat

I was throwing away some spent surplus cases that I shot a few weeks back, and noticed the one below. Out of about 40-50 rds, this is the only one with the least bit of noticeable damage.

Bad spot in the steel I guess?

Yeah, it happens. You're not reloading them so don't give it another thought. Those cases have some age on them plus, they weren't made with the finest material on earth.

I would pay attention to the primer more. Be certain you have the protrusion set correctly on your firing pin. Unlike many other rifles, the Mosin is easily adjustable. Too much and you get a pierced primer. That's no fun!

it is not that uncommon that a 7.62x54r casing comes apart like that. The ammo is old. I have had a casing get stuck in the chamber, only half of it ejected with the cycling of the bolt. I had to get a brkoen shell extractor to get the rest of it out.

That's actually a good piece of wisdom for everyone in every caliber. Broken shell extractors are cheap. They're even cheaper when need one, you'll feel like it's the best money you've spent in years.

this has happened a few times with surplus 7.62x54. I had a case get stuck so hard that i had to hit the bolt handle on the wood bench at the range to get it to open. luckily these old mosins are built like a tank and can take a "beatin'"

I come up with a good one on rare occasion.

The shell extractor is worth its weight in gold when a shell is stuck. In my case i can not imagine any other way to get the broken case out.

If i was just entering the Mosin game I would order up one with the first can of ammo.
