Just watched your video. . WOW. Cool.

was reading on another forum that shooting IDPA is great "real-world" practice. Maybe even better than an actual 1-time class for "defensive" handgun use. Shooting at the range is fun, but I am ready to go to the next level of practice/training.

I am looking to take a more "real-world" type class, but maybe I need to look into this IDPA.

Can you tell me more about it? I see you shot this match up in Oak Ridge.

What is the cost? How do you sign up? Any info about this would be helpful.

Thanks.

ORSAIDPA is the website to check out. It will answer many of your questions. You can even check out the stages we shot last Saturday. Also, check the "links"; the national IDPA website is on there as well as the club in Cleveland (they have a very good club too).

As GD stated, orsaidpa.com has most of your answers. Also check out orsaap.com to check out the other action pistol activities happening at ORSA. I also highly recommend you try out the USPSA matches - also a lot of fun and trigger time.

Cost for the matches - $10 for ORSA members, $15 for non members. You can sign up at the range on match day or, for the IDPA match, you can pre- register at ORSAIDPA.com. Be at the range by 930 for registration and new shooter orientation/meeting.

Both IDPA and USPSA matches are great games (only) making holes in cardboard targets. However, it does give you a chance to practice and hone your handgun handling skills while under the clock (drawing, reloading, strong and weak hand shooting) and there is an adrenalin rush when the timer goes off and you are trying to get a good score/beat your buddies. It is addictive. By all means come on out and have some fun. Look forward to seeing you at the range.

I had fun at this match as well. It was my first IDPA match and first pistol competition period. I think that I did pretty well for a first-timer. I ranked in the top 30 overall (they just posted the results). I look forward to coming back up there and shooting again. Hopefully I will make the USPSA in a few weeks. I just need to pick up a few more mag holders...

sschrick, I would definitely recommend going to a match and try it out. The guys up there were friendly (even though there were some frustrated with all the new shooters oh well).

Nice job with the camera bubbiesdad.

It wasn't frustration w/ the new shooters (not their fault), it was just that A LOT more shooters showed up than anyone expected. Last Saturday was an special match (more stages than usual and lunch provided by the club), so the huge number of shooters threw everyone off a little. New shooters are great and always welcome. The more, the merrier!

Like 2A said, try USPSA and IDPA (the steel shoot on the 4th Sat is fun too); find which is best for you (maybe all!).

Can anyone tell me how to join orsa? Do I need a sponsor?

There are applications on the gates and you can also get them on line at orsaonline.org. You do not need a sponsor, but it does speed up the approval process.
