Structured Settlement Mass-Mailing?

A curiosity question-- Do lots of people receive junk mail from Structured Settlement loanshark companies?

I started getting repeat snail-mail from Seneca One two or three years ago, desperately wanting to loan me money on my structured settlement. Supposedly they know about my structured settlement from "public records".

Only problem-- I don't receive any structured settlements as far as I know. It would stand to reason that I would know about something like that. :)

So anyway I ignored the junk mail for a few months then a Seneca One salesman called wanting to loan me money on my structured settlement. So I asked him, "What structured settlement? I never heard about one. Maybe I'm missing out on something." Salesman says, "Give me your birthdate, SSN, address, and I'll find out for you."

I said, "Hey your company has my phone number and address. Why are you writing and calling if you don't know details about my supposed structured settlement?"

The guy said he would remove my name from their mail and call list, but first he needed my name and address. I said, "Hey, you already know my phone number because you just called. You know my name because you asked for me by name. And you already know my address because you keep sending junk mail."

So the fella says, "I can't take yer name off the list if I don't know the details." And I replied, "In that case you can keep wasting money sending junk mail for all eternity. It doesn't cost me anything to toss it in the trash."

So at least they didn't keep calling, but the junk mail keeps coming. Over time, it is more and more different structured settlement loansharks sending junk mail wanting to loan me money on a stuctured settlement attachment or however they make their dough.

Many of the structured settlement loansharks are different "fancy named" companies who state in the junk mail, "A division of Seneca One". But lots of other loanshark junk mail comes from companies who don't advertise that connection. The junk mails have been multiplying like cockroaches. Was paying bills tonite and tossed about 8 structured settlement loanshark junkmails in the trash!

So am curious of the most likely explanation--

1. Somebody with my same name receives settlement payments from walmart for slipping on a wet floor, or from macdonalds for hot coffee, but the loansharks made a mistake and think that it is me getting the settlement checks?

2. For some crazy reason the loansharks send near-weekly junk mail to every household in the USA just in case one out of ten thousand happen to be receiving settlement checks and needs to borrow money?

3. It is an evil plot by those sneaky aliens from Arcturus IV? Or possibly even Scientologists?

So is it a common experience to receive constant junk mail from structured settlement loansharks?

I've started getting calls wanting to know if I'm still interested in buying gold and silver. I told one guy that I had $20 left from last weeks check and I thought it would be good to invest it in gold. He hung up!

Haven't had the structured settlement people call or mail yet but I guess it coming.

Do you have a structured settlement and need cash now?

No! No! No! No! :)

I knew a guy that would take the postage paid return envelope and tape it to a box of bricks. He would usually get off their list pretty fast.

That's a great idea! I used to send the envelope back empty, but this is much better.

Fabulous idea.

I always would just discard commercial junk mail, but always had the practice of mailing back stuffed postage paid envelopes from any politicians I don't like (which includes nearly all of them), That way if they didn't have enough sense except to keep sending me mail, they would have to pay for the privilege of not pruning their mailing lists. :)

Wife works for post office. I just now asked her if the PO will accept a box of bricks with a return envelope taped to it, and she said definitely! Of course bricks are kinda expensive nowadays, so perhaps it would be cheaper to mail a box of dirt or rocks. It would be tempting to mail back a box of stale leftovers cleaned out of the refrigerator, but that might break some kind of postal health regulation.

How about writing "refused-return to sender" on it?

Put it back in your mailbox for the mailman to send it back.

I used to open the junk and cram all of it in their return envelope.

Now is just toss all solicitations in my burn box.

For quite a spell, I'd pick one junk mailer per month and cram as much other junk mail as would fit into their return envelope and send it to them - One month company xyz would get junk mail from companies rty, zyx, pqb, xgh, etc... the next month, company rty would get it all. After that, company pqb and so on. (I don't get much junk mail anymore!) :pleased:
